The lead-up to Christmas across Australia brings a host of light displays and town festivals. Here are some of our faves, for those who want a simple festive outing.
Melbourne CBD – Christmas Square at Fed Square
From 28 November to 25 December, Melbourne’s city heart at Fed Square transforms into “Christmas Square” with a 17.5-metre Christmas tree, light and sound shows, and sparkling decorations across Swanston Street and the main square. The event is free and the venue is noted for accessibility, with lift access and wheelchair-friendly walkways.
Brisbane City – King George Square & Queen Street Mall
Brisbane offers multiple city-centre displays. The lighting of the 22-metre Christmas tree at King George Square begins 28 November and remains on display through to early January, while the “City Hall Lights” show runs from 5 to 24 December, every 15 minutes from 7.30pm to midnight, with an accessible event layout.
Sydney CBD – Martin Place & the Christmas Tree Display
In Sydney, one of the most beloved traditions is the giant Christmas tree and markets on in Martin Place, complete with nightly light shows and choirs performing throughout December. Just a few minutes away, St Mary’s Cathedral offers a spectacular Christmas projection show that draws big crowds, with food and gift stalls, live performances and more every night on 17 – 25 December 2025.
Bendigo, Victoria – Rosalind Park Tree Lighting Festival
In regional Victoria, Bendigo’s light display is a highlight, with the special tree lighting event taking place in Rosalind Park on Friday 21 November 2025, from about 6.30pm to 9pm with the lighting at approx 8.45pm. The free event features roving entertainers, carols, face painters and more, it’s the perfect community event for a family day out.
Geelong & Surf Coast – Weekend Light Festival
Around Geelong, the waterfront and town centre begin their light-and-sound programme along the bay from 22 November 2025 to 7 January 2026. The highlight is a 25-metre floating Christmas tree, the largest in Australia, boasting 800 lights anchored at Steampacket Gardens. The sound and light show will be staged each night between 8:30pm and midnight, with shows playing every 15 minutes.
