January is an ideal time for Aussies to travel, offering milder climates, lighter crowds and excellent value across many popular destinations. Whether you’re looking for winter landscapes, cultural festivals or a relaxing summer escape, several countries shine at the beginning of the year.

Here are four standout options for an overseas trip in January.

1. Japan

Japan is one of the best January destinations thanks to its crisp winter landscapes and rich cultural traditions. Travellers can head to Hokkaido for world-class powder snow, with ski towns like Niseko, Furano and Rusutsu offering soft, dry snowfall ideal for beginners and experienced skiers alike. Away from the slopes, Nagano is home to the famous snow monkeys of Jigokudani, a gentle day trip that remains popular with all ages.

In the major cities, January is a calmer time to visit. Kyoto’s temples are quieter after the New Year period, and Tokyo offers excellent shopping sales across districts like Ginza and Shinjuku. It’s also peak season for hearty winter dishes such as hot pots, ramen and oden – perfect after a day in the cold.

2. New Zealand

Just a short flight from Australia, New Zealand delivers its best weather in January. With warm days and long daylight hours, it’s an ideal time for outdoor adventures. The South Island is particularly impressive, with Queenstown offering lake cruises, gentle walks and wine tours that cater to a range of fitness levels.

Nearby, Milford Sound is at its most dramatic, with waterfalls flowing from recent rain and clear skies allowing spectacular views on cruises.

On the North Island, Rotorua’s geothermal attractions and spa experiences pair well with easy bushwalks, while Wellington’s waterfront, museums and cultural festivals make it a pleasant city break. For those who enjoy independent travel, January is also a prime month for a New Zealand road trip.

3. Canada

If you’re dreaming of a classic winter getaway, Canada in January is a standout choice. The Canadian Rockies are at their most striking during this time, particularly around Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper. Travellers can enjoy activities such as ice skating, wildlife spotting and gondola rides, along with scenic rail journeys through snowy valleys.

Those seeking something truly memorable can head further north to Yukon or Northwest Territories, where January is peak season for viewing the Northern Lights. For a more relaxed holiday, cities such as Vancouver and Montreal offer cosy winter charm with museums, food tours and picturesque snow-dusted streets.

4. Spain

Spain’s gentle winter makes it one of Europe’s most comfortable January destinations. Barcelona is ideal for sightseeing without the usual summer crowds, allowing visitors to explore Gaudí’s masterpieces and stroll through the Gothic Quarter at a slower pace. In the south, Seville enjoys mild temperatures perfect for wandering its historic streets, visiting the Alcázar, and sampling tapas in traditional neighbourhood bars.

January also features the cherished Three Kings’ Day celebrations on January 6, bringing parades and lively festivities across the country. With fewer tourists, lower prices and plenty of cultural attractions, Spain offers a relaxed European escape during an otherwise quiet season.
