A granddaughter who is grieving her elderly grandmother who tested positive for the coronavirus a number of times before her death, has spoken up and shared her experience.

While speaking to Sunrise, 76-year-old Anne Fahey’s granddaughter Nicole Fahey says she and her family found out about their beloved nan’s result in a shocking way.

Anne passed away in Sydney’s troubled Newmarch House on Saturday afternoon – just a mere 48 hours after she was made aware she had contracted COVID-19.

Ms Fahey was the 14 person of 15 people to have died from the virus at the aged care facility, which now has 63 confirmed cases.

Her family is still reeling from their devastating loss and the shock of finding out their “beautiful nan” had been confirmed positive after multiple negative results.

“Dad accidentally hit a mobile number and he was calling back the nurse who spoke to him earlier that day,” Nicole Fahey claimed on Sunrise.

“She said ‘oh, I’m not dealing with Anne Fahey anymore. Haven’t you been called yet? She’s positive.”

“So we actually found out by accident.”

“Nan was so happy and completely fine, she was 76, she was one of the younger ones in there, she loved Newmarch House and was never one to complain,” Fahey went on to say.

“In fact, just on Wednesday she told her sister and friends that they didn’t need to call her everyday because she’s fine.”

Nicole’s claims come amidst Newmarch House recording its fifteenth death on Monday.

The victim is a male resident who had no immediate family and died after testing positive to COVID-19.

The aged care facility has now announced stricter health protocols, including testing all staff on entry and keeping residents who have tested positive to the virus separated from the rest of the facility members.

“Part of the reason why we’re wanting to speak out about this is because it’s too late for our beautiful nan, but her friends are in there, so we’re doing everything we can to help their fight,” Fahey said.
