The Prince and Princess of Wales have honoured volunteers, charity workers and community leaders at their annual Christmas concert in Westminster Abbey.
The royal family said the event, created five years ago by Princess Kate, gives them an opportunity to thank those who have supported their communities throughout the year through their volunteer and fundraising efforts.
The Princess of Wales who completed preventative chemotherapy for an unspecified cancer last year, used the occasion to share a thoughtful message with guests.
Each attendee received a note from the Princess reflecting on how a simple “moment of listening” or a “word of comfort” can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life.
Catherine arrived at the abbey with Prince William and their three children ahead of the Prince of Wales delivering a reading to the 1,600 guests. Actors Kate Winslet, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Joe Locke were also in attendance, along with comedian Babatunde Aléshé.
“At a time when life can sometimes feel fragmented or uncertain, the Christmas season invites us to remember the power of reaching out to one another with generosity of heart, understanding and hope,” Catherine wrote in her note.
The royals shared some footage from the Christmas concert on Instagram.
“So special to come together this evening for this year’s ‘Together at Christmas’ Carol Service,” the caption read.
“Grateful to everyone who helped make it such a warm and memorable celebration of love at Christmas”.
Kensington Palace said the service welcomed people of all faiths and those with none.
Westminster Abbey’s choir was set to perform traditional carols, with contemporary music from Katie Melua.
The “Together at Christmas” concert will air on Britain’s ITV on Christmas Eve, and 15 community carol services supported by the Royal Foundation will take place around the country throughout December.
