Robert Irwin has delivered one of the most emotional and heartwarming moments of Dancing with the Stars US this season, dedicating his latest dance to his mum, Terri Irwin.
The 20-year-old wildlife warrior performed a slow contemporary routine to Phil Collins’ You’ll Be in My Heart with his partner Witney Carson, a song that perfectly captured the love between mother and son.
But it was the surprise ending that left everyone in tears. As the music swelled, Terri appeared on stage, stepping in to dance the final steps with her son. Robert spun her around before pulling her in for a long embrace, breaking down as he rested his head on her shoulder.
The audience, judges, and even host Julianne Hough were visibly moved. “He’s looking down at you, kid, and he’s smiling,” said judge Bruno Tonioli, referencing Robert’s late father, Steve Irwin. “You gave us all of your heart and soul. This was a true expression of everlasting love.”
Carrie Ann Inaba added through tears, “If I had kids, I’d want them to be like Robert.” Derek Hough agreed, saying, “The world needs the Irwin family,” while fellow Aussie Kym Johnson praised Terri for raising such “amazing” children.
Bindi Irwin was seen wiping away tears in the audience before joining her mum and brother on stage for a family hug. The touching performance earned Robert a near-perfect score of 35 out of 40.
Ahead of the performance, Robert shared a heartfelt Instagram post: “Tonight I dance for my mum, the strongest person I know… I hope I can use this dance to share what she means to me, to our family, and to say thank you for always supporting me through life’s ups and downs.”
Terri later responded with her own post: “I’m incredibly honoured that Robert thought of me. Steve and I always talked about how much it meant to us to be parents. So much love. This will be a special night.”
