Rob Reiner’s son has been arrested on homicide charges after the filmmaker and his wife were found dead in their Los Angeles home.
An official with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department confirmed that Nick Reiner, 32, has been arrested on homicide charges.
He was initially held in a Los Angeles County jail on a $US4 million ($A6 million) bond, according to jail records.
Police found two bodies at the Reiners’ home at 3.40pm on Sunday in the Brentwood, Los Angeles on Sunday. Other officials later confirmed the identity of the victims as Rob, 78, and his wife Michele, 68.
It has been reported that the couple had been stabbed to death.
Rob’s son, Nick had previously opened up about his struggles with substance abuse and about being homeless when he was on the run and refusing to go to rehab.
In a 2016 interview with People magazine, he revealed that he went into rehab for drug abuse at age 15, and eventually had around 17 stays in rehab facilities over the years.
https://www.instagram.com/p/DSSxbyfkaEc/Rob and Nick co-wrote the film Being Charlie, based on Nick’s experiences with heroin addiction and homelessness, which Nick had described as “the most personal thing I’ve ever been involved in,” in a 2016 podcast with Marc Maron.
Country music legend and friend Reba McEntire has paid tribute to the filmmaker on social media, writing: “I enjoyed every minute I was around Rob Reiner. He was one of a kind.
“I got to work with him on the movie North and he also helped us with our ending of my video, ‘Does He Love You.’ I sure will miss him. What a gift he was to this world. Rest in peace, my friend.”
Rob was a prolific director in Hollywood, starting with his 1984 mockumentary This is Spinal Tap. He also directed classics like Stand by Me and When Harry Met Sally, as well as The Princess Bride, Misery and A Few Good Men.
The filmmaker was married to photographer Michele Singer Reiner since 1989, and they met while he was directing When Harry Met Sally.
