A profound sense of loss has settled over both Denmark and Australia following the death of Queen Mary of Denmark’s father, John Donaldson, who has died aged 84.

The Danish Royal House confirmed the news “with great sadness” on Sunday, marking the passing of a man described not only as a respected academic, but a deeply devoted father and grandfather.

Queen Mary, 54, had travelled to Hobart in March at the conclusion of her state visit with King Frederik X, where she was able to spend precious final moments with her father. Those last days together, the palace said, were filled with “good and present moments”, a quiet farewell after a lifetime of closeness.

In a deeply personal statement, the queen laid bare her grief.

“My heart is heavy and my thoughts are grey,” she said. “My beloved father is dead. But I know that when the grief subsides, the memories will brighten, and what will remain most strongly is the love and gratitude for everything he gave me and taught me.”

Donaldson, who died on April 11, is survived by his wife Susan Moody, his children and grandchildren. A private memorial service will be held at a later date, though it remains unclear whether the queen will return to Australia to attend.

Born in Scotland in 1941, Donaldson built a distinguished career as a professor of applied mathematics, teaching at both Aarhus University and the University of Copenhagen. Yet beyond academia, he was perhaps best known to the public as the steady, proud figure who walked his daughter down the aisle when she married Frederik in 2004 – a moment that moved millions.

Despite his daughter’s global profile, Donaldson remained a private man, part of a family that Queen Mary once described as “firmly down to earth”. He largely stayed out of the spotlight, even as his daughter’s life transformed into that of a future queen.

His death comes nearly three decades after the loss of Mary’s mother, Henrietta Donaldson, who died in 1997.

In recent days, the Danish royal family’s official website has been transformed into a page of condolence, with messages of sympathy pouring in from around the world.
