Tragedy has struck a senior New South Wales politician, prompting the cancellation of multiple public engagements.
Shadow Tourism Minister and NSW Deputy Nationals Leader Kevin Anderson confirmed that his wife, Anna Anderson, died earlier this week, saying he would step back from his responsibilities as he and his family grieve.
In a statement shared on Thursday, Anderson said he would cancel all commitments associated with the 2026 Tamworth Country Music Festival.
“Due to an unforeseen and tragic family loss I will be cancelling all my commitments for the 2026 Tamworth Country Music Festival,” Anderson wrote on social media.
“I deeply appreciate the understanding and support my family and I have already received.
“Thankyou for the love and care shown to our family at this time.”
The cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.
According to local newspaper The Northern Daily Leader, Anna Anderson died unexpectedly on Tuesday. She was a mother of three and had worked as a pharmacist in the Tamworth region for more than 30 years.
Karen Carter Pharmacy owner Karen Carter described Anna’s death as an “absolute shock”. Carter told the publication the pair were colleagues and close friends who studied together at Sydney University.
“She had a fantastic sense of humour,” Carter said.
More than 2000 people reacted to Anderson’s announcement on social media, with hundreds offering condolences and messages of support.
“Just devastating news. RIP dearest Anna, your warm generous and loving sprit will be missed. Anna’s kindness and spirit will always be remembered,” one commenter wrote.
Another commented, “I am so sorry to see this sad news about Anna. We went to school together in Gunnedah and only just reconnected in Narrabri the last couple of years.”
