Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced a national day of mourning for the victims on the Bondi terror attack.

After consulting with Sydney rabbi Yehoram Ulman, who lost family members in the attack, he announced that the national day of mourning will be held January 22.

“This will have a theme of ‘light will win’, a gathering of unity and remembrance, which has been determined by the rabbi,” he said.

“Flags will be flown at half mast in all Commonwealth buildings around Australia, and further details will be announced at the end of this week.”

The announcement comes after Albanese confirmed that a royal commission will be held into antisemitism and social cohesion.

He has also recalled parliament for a special two-day sitting next week to discuss new hate speech and gun laws.

Since the terror attack, there have been several memorials held for the 15 victims, including one by lifesavers at Bondi Beach.

NSW Police have charged gunman Naveed Akram with 59 offences over the mass shooting.
