Beloved journalist and Nine News presenter Peter Overton is taking time away from the newsdesk after undergoing surgery for a serious wrist injury sustained in a fall at his Sydney home.

His wife, media personality Jessica Rowe, shared the update on social media, posting a photo of Overton smiling from his hospital bed with his arm in a cast and a thumb raised.

“Never a dull moment in our house!” she wrote. “Petee recently had a nasty fall at home, badly injuring his wrist.”

Rowe revealed the 58-year-old newsreader underwent a four-hour operation involving a bone graft, three metal plates and “various screws”, adding that he is now under “strict instructions to rest and recover”.

She thanked the medical teams who cared for him, saying, “A special shout out to our healthcare system – the emergency nurses, physios, doctors and specialist surgeons who are the most remarkable, caring and compassionate people. We are very lucky.”

Overton’s injury comes just months after he underwent surgery to remove a polyp from his vocal cords – a procedure that explained his raspier voice over the holidays and also required time away from the newsroom.

Known for his calm presence and trusted reporting, Overton has been a fixture of Australian television for decades. Fans and colleagues alike have sent messages of support, wishing him a smooth and speedy recovery.

While no exact date for his return has been set, Rowe reassured followers that he will be back on air once fully healed. In the meantime, the veteran presenter is focused on rest and rehabilitation, ensuring he can resume his work at full strength.
