The NRL community is in mourning following the tragic death of 19-year-old South Sydney prospect Johannes Logan.
Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly personally informed Logan’s teammates of the devastating news on Tuesday morning, with the club releasing a formal statement the following day.
It was later confirmed that Logan had died by suicide.
Logan was widely regarded as an exceptional young athlete. A standout at St Joseph’s College in Hunters Hill, he excelled across multiple sports – playing in the first XV rugby side, the first water polo team, captaining the senior swimming team, and representing New South Wales in rugby.
In 2025, he joined the Rabbitohs’ pathways program.
“The South Sydney Rabbitohs are mourning the passing of Jersey Flegg Cup player, Johannes Logan, who passed away this week,” the Rabbitohs said in a statement.
“Johannes represented the South Sydney Rabbitohs in eight SG Ball Cup under 19s men’s games, and one Jersey Flegg Cup under 21s men’s game, last season.
“Johannes, who came from Orange in central west New South Wales, was a much-loved member of the Rabbitohs, willing to support his teammates and the club on and off the field.
“The young middle forward had developed strong bonds and friendships within the playing group and staff, and he will be dearly missed by everyone connected to the Rabbitohs.”
The club confirmed it is working with the RLPA, the NRL, and Logan’s former school to support those closest to him – including family, friends, teammates and staff – in the wake of the tragedy.
“[It is a] very difficult time, and we all request privacy for his family and friends while they mourn the passing of Johannes,” the club said.
Emus Rugby Club in Orange, where Logan first began playing the sport, also issued an emotional tribute, saying the “club is full of incredibly heavy hearts this week”.
“Johannes spent his younger years running around Endeavour Oval, on and off the field, before heading off to St Joseph’s College, Hunters Hill and then the South Sydney Rabbitohs,” the Emus statement said.
“He was an incredible talent in both rugby codes and was a natural athlete, dominating in the pool as both a swimmer and water polo player as well.
“Most importantly though, he was a great kid who grew into a wonderful young man. He was a dearly loved friend to many in our club, and is sorely missed.
“Our entire community knows the monumental impact Johannes, and his entire family have had on our club and our players, past and present.
“We will continue to offer Johannes’ family whatever support they need, and so to our players, club members and anyone in our community who needs it.
“While we ask our community respects the family’s privacy during the toughest of times, please feel free to share memories and photos of Johannes on this post.”
A GoFundMe page has since been created to “support the Logan family during this difficult time”.
“If you would like to help out, a donation would be most welcomed. These funds will go directly to the family to help them during this difficult time,” the GoFundMe page said.
“Our prayers are with Rene, Andrew, AJ, and Abi. You will be missed Johannes.”
The fundraiser had reached $73,800 at the time of writing.
