Catherine West has announced her resignation as chair of Nine Entertainment, less than 18 months after taking on the role.
West, who has been on Nine’s board since 2016 as deputy chair, was appointed chair last June, replacing Peter Costello.
During her time in the role, she oversaw a major culture review at the media giant. She will formally step down on November 7.
She said that it had been “a privilege” to be part of the leadership of the “iconic company”.
“I thank my colleagues on the board for their sound counsel and support.
“I also wanted to thank and acknowledge our CEO Matt Stanton and recognise his energy, strategic leadership and vision.”
Former ABC deputy chair Peter Tonagh will replace West in November, following a vast-senior level career in the the media industry.
As well as his experience at the ABC, Tonagh has worked as CEO and CFO for Foxtel, CEO of News Corp and as interim CEO for the REA Group. He is also chair of Quantium, GTN Limited and not-for-profit organisation Bus Stop Films.
He resigned from the ABC late last year before joining Nine as an independent non-executive director in January 2025.
“It’s an honour to be appointed chair-elect of the Nine Board — a great Australian company with a rich heritage and an exciting future,” Tonagh said.
“On behalf of the Board, I thank Catherine for her leadership, guidance, and commitment to Nine, which have been instrumental in positioning the company for sustainable success.”
