Allan Moffat, one of Australian motorsport’s most influential figures, has been remembered as an icon and pioneer following his death at age 86.
The four-time Bathurst champion died on Saturday morning, surrounded by family, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Regarded as one of the greatest competitors in Australian racing, the Canadian-born driver secured four Touring Car Championship titles between 1973 and 1983.
After retiring in 1989, Moffat remained involved in the sport through team management and commentary, further cementing his legacy.
Supercars CEO James Warburton paid tribute to Moffat’s lasting impact.
“Allan was a pioneer, a champion and an icon whose impact on our sport is impossible to measure,” he said.
“His record speaks for itself.
“He was a dominant force during one of the most competitive eras in touring car racing, and his legendary rivalry – and friendship – with Peter Brock defined a generation.
“But Allan’s legacy reaches far beyond the racetrack.
“He brought a new level of professionalism to the sport, transforming the role of sponsorship and team management in ways that shaped the modern era of Supercars. His influence can still be felt in the paddock today.
“Allan Moffat was one of the greatest we will ever see. He will be deeply missed.”
A Bathurst champion in 1970, 1971, 1973 and 1977, Moffat became synonymous with Ford in Australia, his rivalry with Brock defining nearly a decade at Mount Panorama.
He remains one of only three drivers to claim pole position at Bathurst three years in a row.
Beyond the mountain, Moffat won Sandown six times and recorded 32 Touring Car Championship race victories.
He later added success in a Mazda to his storied career.
Born in Canada, Moffat moved to Australia at 17.
He had been living with Alzheimer’s disease since his 2019 diagnosis.
His family released a statement honouring his life and legacy.
“Australia has lost one of its sporting legends today with the passing of Allan Moffat OBE,” they said.
“Allan Moffat was not only one of Australia’s most successful and admired motor racing drivers, but a towering figure whose influence shaped the nation’s motorsport identity for more than five decades.
“Revered for his skill, tenacity, and exceptional professionalism, Moffat’s legacy is etched into Australian sporting history.”
