Sunrise host and former Olympian Matt Shirvington has gone head-to-head with a V8 Supercar and won in a rematch against champion David Reynolds.

It was Shirvington’s second attempt at taking on the racing legend, in a man-versus-machine showdown at Mount Panorama.

In February, he raced Reynolds at Sydney Motorsport Park but was narrowly beaten by the 600-horsepower V8.

This time, the 45-year-old laced up his runners and wore a white singlet and grey shorts as he powered through a 20-metre dash, crossing the finish line first.

“This is redemption,” Shirvo said in an interview after the race.

“I didn’t have to wait 10 years, but I had to wait long enough to finally get the edge over the Supercar champion, the Bathurst champion.”

Reynolds admitted his defeat, saying: “You deserve it. I didn’t get the best start then. Apparently the no training helped you.”

But Shirvo’s moment of glory didn’t last long, as questions were quickly raised about a possible false start.

“I have someone in my ear. Shirvo, sorry, we have had a review,” co-host Katie Brown announced.

“They are suggesting you ran off to make with a false start. You want to make it third time lucky? Is that a rematch?”

Weekend Sunrise host David Woiwod added to the fun, teasing Shirvo: “They’re saying you might’ve taken off a bit early. Ready to try your luck on a third attempt?”

The race took place ahead of the Bathurst 1000, one of Australia’s biggest motorsport events.
