Despite the rising number of COVID case numbers in NSW, authorities are no longer identifying venues visited by COVID cases.

Instead, social media watchers have noticed that over the past few days, venues of concern in Sydney have not been listed, despite the majority of cases occurring in the city.

The Daily Telegraph has revealed that, under a new risk-based approach, places like supermarkets and shopping centres throughout Sydney won’t be added to the list of venues of concern.

The change, made quietly over the weekend, means officials will now focus their contact tracing efforts on other settings where COVID is more likely to be transmitted. These include visits between households, workplaces, healthcare and education sites.

As NSW Health’s Dr Jeremy McAnulty said in a press conference early this week: “We’re really trying to focus the public’s attention on those where we believe there is a true risk.”

“What we’ve learnt is where the infection is most likely to spread. So that’s why we’re focusing on those areas.”
