Former tennis champion Jelena Dokic has shared her joy at finding love again, opening up about her new relationship after years of being single.
The 42-year-old confirmed she is in the early stages of a romance in an interview with 9Honey.
“It’s hard sometimes being [in the] public eye and people want to know things, and I get that. I’ve been alone for a long time… I think everyone’s journey is unique, everyone’s healing journey is unique, whether it comes to your private life or your professional life, and that’s what healing and taking care of yourself is.” she said.
“You’ve got to find what works for you.”
Dokic went public with her relationship on July 14, sharing an Instagram post with a man later identified as Yane Veselinov.
“You are my calm, safe, peaceful, and happy place. So glad I found you,” she wrote alongside their selfie.
Her announcement comes almost three years after she revealed her heartbreak over the end of her 19-year relationship with Tin Bikic.
Since then the star has been open with fans about her healing process, and said that what helped her heal was “being alone for a while. For some people, it works being alone for a while. For others, it doesn’t… the best thing I can say… in general [about] breakups and so on, try and take care of yourself and find what works for you, and sometimes that might be being alone and discovering who you are.
“I think it’s not a one-size-fits-all when it comes to healing.”
While Veselinov didn’t join her at the Logie Awards on August 3, Dokic celebrated with her Nine Network colleagues and fellow tennis great Todd Woodbridge.
She thanked Woodbridge in her acceptance speech after winning the Logie for Best Documentary Program for Unbreakable: The Jelena Dokic Story, crediting him for her career.
“Lastly, Todd Woodbridge, you’re my person,” she said when accepting the award.
“You believed in me professionally. I hope everyone finds a Todd like I did,” Dokic added.
