If you spent heavily over the holiday period, there may be an opportunity to recoup some funds, with the NSW government currently holding close to $300 million in unclaimed money that could belong to individuals and businesses across the state.
Revenue New South Wales is managing more than 800,000 separate unclaimed payments that are awaiting return to their rightful owners.
The unclaimed funds originate from a range of sources, including cheques that were never cashed, overpaid bills and dividends that failed to reach their intended recipients.
The value of the payments varies widely. While some amounts total only a few hundred dollars, others are worth thousands – and in some cases, millions.
Authorities say some of the unclaimed money has been held for decades.
Figures show the funds are spread across all regions of Sydney.
Approximately $92 million is linked to addresses in the city and eastern suburbs, $77 million to Western Sydney, $53 million to the northern suburbs, and more than $6.5 million to the Sutherland Shire.
Residents can check whether they are owed money by visiting the Revenue New South Wales unclaimed money page and searching their name.
