Human remains believed to belong to missing grandfather Chris Baghsarian have been found.
The 85-year-old was taken from his home in North Ryde, Sydney early in the morning on February 13, in what police believe to be a case of mistaken identity.
At around 8am on Tuesday, detectives investigating the case found human remains near a golf club in Pitt Town.
Tactical, general duties and forensic officers, along with investigators were at the scene as police conducted line searches and combed the area where the remains were found.
Police are in the process of formally identifying the remains, and have said that information regarding the investigation led police to the golf course.
“We’ve traced that vehicle that we suspect was involved and that can forensically link the vehicle to Mr Baghsarian, and to the stronghold that we have spoken about in Dural,” Detective Acting Superintendent Andrew Mark said.
“Putting that together is why we believe it’s Mr Baghsarian.”
The remains were reportedly wrapped in a carpet or towel, according to 9News. It has been reported that Baghsarian’s family have also been notified about the discovery and left “deeply upset” by the findings and have asked for privacy.
The update came just over a week after police confirmed they had found a burnt-out car linked to the grandfather’s abduction in Sydney’s west.
Police had previously established a crime scene at a property in Dural, where the grandfather was believed to have been taken after the abduction.
During a raid, they had seized evidence, including footage of the missing grandfather with his alleged kidnappers.
Police have confirmed that the person believed to be the intended target of the kidnapping is safe and in no immediate danger. They are now focusing their efforts on identifying the offenders.
“The efforts that have gone in, and the response that has come from the public, we’re all outraged that this has happened to an innocent man,” Marks said.
“I am proud of the police and the efforts. Police have been working 24 hours a day since Friday the 13th.”
The investigation continues, and anyone with any information or footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
