Hollywood icon Goldie Hawn has spoken about her six-year absence from the screen, saying it comes down to one key factor, finding the right role.

The 80-year-old has not appeared in a film since 2020’s The Christmas Chronicles 2, where she starred alongside her longtime partner Kurt Russell.

In an interview with People magazine, Hawn said she has turned down multiple opportunities in recent years.

“It’s about the content,” she said. “It has to do with the content. Acting for acting’s sake, taking things … I’ve read a lot of shows, a lot of scripts that I didn’t like or I didn’t think I’d fit. The one thing about acting is that I’ve done it, and I had a great career, and I honour that.”

She said her time away from acting is not a sign of retirement, but a reflection of her desire to wait for a project that excites her.

“I would love to get a material that could actually be like, ‘Oh my God, I want this so bad. This is so funny. She’s so crazy. She’s so interesting,’” she said.

“But I haven’t come across it. If somebody came up with a really cool, funny script … I think it would be great.”

Hawn’s career spans more than six decades, with roles in films including Cactus Flower, which earned her an Academy Award, as well as Overboard, The First Wives Club and Death Becomes Her.

She also shared her hope of one day working alongside her daughter, actress Kate Hudson.

“I would love that. And the two of us have thought a lot about it,” Hawn said.

Hudson has previously said she would be open to the idea, even suggesting she might create a project herself if the right script does not emerge.

“I hope so! It’s got to [happen]!” she said. “I might have to go disappear into the mountains somewhere and just write it myself.”

Hawn said while a larger family project involving all her children may be unlikely, she has not ruled it out entirely.

“We’re never going to do it, but it’s such a great idea because we have so much talent,” she said. “Never say never, because that could happen at any time.”
