Sir Elton John’s sons, Zachary and Elijah, look all grown up in a newly released family portrait set to be on display in London’s National Portrait Gallery.
The 78-year-old musician shares his children with husband David Furnish, with the photo taken in their home library, just three days before christmas.
For the portrait, John wore a striped dark purple suit with royal blue glasses, pearl necklaces and lilac shoes, while Furnish donned a green suit with a light blue shirt underneath.
Their sons Zachary and Elijah, now aged 15 and 13 respectively, were dressed more casually in a plain tee, jeans and black loafers.
In a statement shared with The Telegraph, John and Furnish talked about working with acclaimed photographer Catherine Opie to capture the photo.
“To have our family photographed by Catherine Opie and on display at the National Portrait Gallery is a huge honour,” they said.
“We are huge admirers of her work and proud to have her beautiful and poignant images in our collection.”
The photographer added that it was “truly an honour” to work with the family, and that they had lunch together before getting to business.
“For me, it represents the humanity of what family can be,” she explained of the final product.
Victoria Siddall, director of the National Portrait Gallery, also shared a statement saying she was “delighted to welcome this important portrait of the Furnish-John family by Catherine Opie into our Collection.”
“It celebrates not only Sir Elton John’s extraordinary achievements in music but also the vital humanitarian and philanthropic work that he and David have undertaken in recent decades, and the family they have built together,” she added.
John and Furnish first met through their mutual friends in 1993, before entering a civil union in December 2005. They had their sons via a surrogate with Zachary born in 2010 and Elijah in 2013. A year after welcoming their second son, they formally exchanged vows on their ninth anniversary.
