A World War II veteran from Sydney was left stunned after being quoted more than $35,000 to repair a broken toilet.

John Rose, 98, said he first noticed “a simple glug” coming from the toilet and called Ferguson’s Plumbing, only to be handed the staggering quote.

“I was working out how much money I had in the bank, so much in this one, so much in that one, and between the two of them come up with this 30-odd thousand or how much it was worth,” Rose told 7NEWS.

Thankfully, a neighbour intervened and helped him avoid the excessive charges.

“Last financial year I gave away $30,000 to charity,” Rose said, adding that he’d rather donate money than lose it on inflated costs.

In the end, another plumber fixed the toilet in about an hour for $550.

But Rose had already paid Ferguson’s $6,000.

While Ferguson’s website boasts glowing reviews, elsewhere customers have posted stark warnings.

Multiple one-star reviews include, “DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!”

“Beware, Before engaging with this company … they quoted me $12,500 to connect a washing machine.”

“Absolutely shocked and disappointed at the final price.”

“An extremely disappointing experience.”

“Worst experience ever.”

Ferguson’s Plumbing is operated by Australian Trades (Pty Ltd), which also trades under eight other names: Andersons Plumbing AUS; Bob’s Plumbing NSW; Dan’s Electrical AUS; Dan’s Electrical NSW; Dan’s Plumbing AUS; Dan’s Plumbing NSW; Lloyd’s Plumbing and Gas; and Willson’s Plumbing NSW.

All entities have now been banned for 60 days while an investigation takes place, with potential for harsher penalties.

Better Regulation and Fair Trading Minister Anoulack Chanthivong said, “We can impose significant financial penalties for those who are caught doing the wrong thing. We could suspend or cancel their licence if the evidence holds up.”

Rose said he shared his story to encourage others to seek a second opinion.
