A cruise passenger has copped some backlash online for a simple rule-breaking act – hanging their laundry to dry on the balcony divider of the cruise ship.

A photo of the act on the Sun Princess cruise ship was shared to a Facebook group with the caption: “enjoying a beautiful sunset to the left of us and someone’s laundry hanging on the right of us.”

The photo showed a pair of inside-out jeans and a leopard print top on hangers hooked over the side of the balcony divider on the ship that was sailing in the Caribbean.

Many have shared their thoughts, with one saying it was “tacky”, while another called it a “hillbilly” move.

Others pointed out that the clothes might blow away, and that it was a potential fire hazard.

But there were a few that backed the act, saying it wasn’t that big of a deal.

“Maybe her washing would have shrunk in dryer. I hardly see this as a major issue. Look out to sea, not what everyone else is doing on their balcony,” one person wrote.

However, John Heald the Brand Ambassador for Carnival Cruise Line, which owns Princess Cruises told passengers the act of hanging things on the balcony is banned “for very, very important safety reasons.”

He added that cabin attendants will remove anything left handing there.

Most ships offer self-service laundry facilities and while they can be busy, passengers also have the option to pay for washing or pressing.

Cabins also typically include a small retractable clothesline in the shower for drying items safely indoors.
