A Spider-Man suit discovered at a beachside property on the NSW Mid North Coast has been confirmed by police as having no connection to the disappearance of William Tyrrell.
Police attended the property on Beach Place in Dunbogan, east of Kendall, on Monday after reports the outfit had been found. The home, located around 20 minutes from where William vanished in 2014, was thoroughly searched, but nothing else of interest was located.
The suit was then forensically examined by detectives from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad. Authorities have now confirmed it is unrelated to William’s case, raising concerns the discovery may have been the result of a hoax or prank. Police have expressed disappointment over the possibility that someone could exploit the tragedy for attention.
William, then a toddler, was last seen wearing a Spider-Man suit while playing outside his foster grandmother’s home on September 12, 2014. A famous photograph of him in the outfit has become the defining image of the ongoing investigation.
Despite extensive police inquiries, no trace of William has ever been found, and no charges have been laid in connection with his disappearance. On the 10-year anniversary of his vanishing, authorities renewed calls for information, and a $1 million reward remains for any details that could solve the case.
An inquest into William’s disappearance was held earlier this year after being adjourned in 2020, with a coroner yet to set a date for the delivery of findings.
Police continue to urge anyone with information, no matter how small it may seem, to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
