Channel 7 sports anchor Matt Carmichael has been made redundant after more than two decades with the network.

Carmichael, 44, had been with Seven for 23 years, and was informed of the decision on Monday, according to the Daily Telegraph.

“Matt will now be taking a well-deserved extended break. Matt leaves as a script craftsman,” an email to staff by Seven News boss Ray Ruka read.

Carmichael will farewell Seven after covering next month’s Bathurst 1000 Supercars motor race.

“Matt has worked at Seven for two decades but, sadly, that will come to an end next month, fittingly after Bathurst 1000,” the email continued.

“We wish Matt all the best and look forward to celebrating his final weeks.”

Carmichael had previously worked on the morning and afternoon news for Seven, Sunrise, and covered major sporting events for the network, including the Olympics and Paralympics, Commonwealth Games, the Australian Open and Bathurst 1000.

He was awarded the Sport Australia Award for best coverage of sport for people with a disability in 2019 for his coverage of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Born in Sydney, the reporter studied a Bachelor of Journalism at Queensland University of Technology before joining Seven.
