Brad Pitt and his family are grieving the heartbreaking loss of his mother, Jane Pitt, who has passed away at the age of 84.
The Oscar-winning actor, 61, has yet to speak publicly about the news, but a family representative confirmed her death to People. Jane’s passing marks the end of an era for the Pitt family, who were raised in Springfield, Missouri by Jane and her husband William Pitt, a former trucking company owner.
In a moving Instagram tribute, Brad’s niece Sydney, daughter of his younger brother Doug, shared a heartfelt message about the woman she lovingly called “Grammy”.
“My sweet Grammy, Jane Etta, we were not ready for you to go yet,” Sydney wrote. “But knowing you are finally free to sing, dance, and paint again makes it a tad easier.”
Sydney reflected on her grandmother’s generosity, warmth, and unwavering love. “If you knew Grammy, you knew she had the biggest heart. She cared deeply for everyone and everything, no questions asked.”
She recalled cherished memories – from painting lessons and life advice to an annual back-to-school tradition that included banana splits for breakfast, craft projects, mini golf, and family dinners.
“She could keep up with all 14 of us grandkids without missing a beat,” she wrote. “There was no limit to the love she gave, and everyone who met her felt it.”
Sydney ended her post with a touching expression of loss: “I don’t know how we move forward without her. But I know she’s still here in every brushstroke, every kind gesture, every hummingbird. She was love in its purest form.”
Jane Pitt largely stayed out of the spotlight, but on rare occasions she joined Brad for red carpet events, proudly supporting him at the 2012 Academy Awards and again in 2014 at the premiere of Unbroken, his film with then-wife Angelina Jolie.
Just weeks ago, Brad paid tribute to his mum during a press appearance for his upcoming film F1. Speaking to Today host Savannah Guthrie, he beamed as he gave her a shoutout: “I gotta say hi to my mum because she watches you every morning… To Jane Pitt. Love you, Mum,” he said, waving and blowing a kiss.
Jane leaves behind her husband William, three children – Brad, Doug and Julie – and a large, loving extended family.
