Australia’s most popular cat names for 2025 have been revealed, with Luna and Leo once again leading the national rankings.
Pet Insurance Australia released its annual list this week after analysing data from thousands of insured cats across the country.
The findings show Australians continue to favour classic, familiar names, although a number of newer, more unconventional choices are steadily rising in popularity.
For female cats, the leading names included Luna, Lucy and Daisy, followed closely by Willow and Bella.
Among male cats, Leo and Milo remained dominant, with Bluey, Billy and Simba also ranking strongly.
“Luna continues its reign as Australia’s favourite female cat name, appearing in nearly every state’s top three,” Pet Insurance Australia spokesperson Nadia Crighton said.
The company said the data highlights a broader trend of owners increasingly viewing their pets as family members.
Human baby names such as Lucy, Annie, Archie and Max continue to surge, while food-inspired names including Mochi, Oreo, Muffin and Honey are gaining momentum.
Fantasy and mythology are also influencing naming trends, with Merlin, Loki and Zeus growing in popularity across several states. The “Bluey effect” remains evident as well, with the beloved Australian children’s show inspiring cat owners nationwide.
State-by-state results revealed notable differences between the east and west coasts.
In NSW, Luna and Leo took the top spots, while Oreo and Mochi reflected a rise in playful, food-themed names.
Victoria’s list featured Yuki – a name inspired by Japanese culture – alongside long-time favourites Daisy and Archie.
Queensland saw an increase in mythical names such as Loki and Merlin, balanced with staples like Lucy and Billy.
In South Australia, more unconventional choices such as Bubbles, Sparky and Flash stood out, paired with popular names like Bella and Simba.
Western Australia’s top names included Boots, Miso and Muffin, with George and Lady also appearing on the list.
Crighton said choosing a name has become “an emotionally significant moment” for many families.
“More than ever, pets are being treated as true family members, and their names absolutely reflect that,” she said.
