Locals at Cabarita Beach on the NSW north coast have witnessed another terrifying shark attack, this time on a surfer known only as “Brad”, who escaped with his life after a shark ripped a massive bite through his board.
The early morning session turned to panic just after 8am when the predator lunged at the surfer near Norries Headland. Witnesses said Brad used his board to shield himself during the struggle, before making it back to shore to stunned onlookers.
Images posted to social media show the surfboard hanging together by a thread, before snapping completely in half as the shaken surfer displayed it to the crowd on the beach.
“It was lucky he was alive after that,” one witness told The Courier Mail, which also reported that recent drone footage in the area had captured a four-metre great white shark.
The latest incident comes just six weeks after a 16-year-old boy was mauled at the same break and rushed to hospital with serious injuries. Vision of that June 29 attack showed the teenager swimming near surfers before being dragged underwater by a shark. Days later, more drone footage revealed a bull shark off the same headland.
Sunday’s attack reignited safety concerns, with locals horrified that the beach has now seen two serious shark incidents in as many months.
Tweed Shire councillor James Owen confirmed Cabarita Beach was immediately closed. “Tweed Shire, Cabarita Beach at Norries Headland is currently closed due to a shark bite incident earlier this morning. Thankfully no one was injured,” he posted on Facebook.
One resident, Kim Maree, who filmed the aftermath, described the frightening scenes. “A bit of drama on the beach after I filmed the beautiful sunrise. Another shark attack! I was swimming there this morning too,” she wrote online.
NSW Police confirmed they are aware of the event, and the council has been notified. Authorities are urging surfers and swimmers to avoid the area while patrols continue to monitor shark activity.
