A statue put up in tribute of rock n’ roll legend Tina Turner in her hometown Brownsville, Tennessee has been criticised online.
The sculpture was put up over the weekend and unveiled at the singer’s school, Carver High School, as part of the annual Tina Turner Heritage Day celebrations.
ABC News US tweeted a photo of the statue – sculpted by Atlanta-based artist Fred Ajanogha – depicting the What’s Love Got to Do with It singer mid-performance at the height of her career.
Fans have shared their comments, with many of them criticising it.
“Love Tina Turner, but this is not her,” wrote one person.
“Let’s normalize refusing ugly statues and hiring someone else to start over,” another added.
“A travesty. Did the artist even look at a photograph of the real Tina Turner?” a third wrote.
“Where are those AMAZING legs and calves? She was not only an awesome singer, she was fit! I don’t think this does her justice,” a fourth added.
The news outlet also posted a photo of the statue to Facebook, which also received negative responses.
“Whoever decided on the hair will not see the kingdom of Heaven,” read one top-rated comment.
“Did the people who made the statue know what Tina Turner looked like?” another asked.
“And she’d be ‘rollin’ rollin’ rollin’ in her grave if she could see this statue’s hair,” a third quipped.
Tina Turner passed away in her home on May 2023 at the age of 83, following a long period of illness.
