Kia vehicle owners have been warned to contact the car company after it was discovered it can burst into flames even if the vehicle is switched off.

Product Safety Australia bought the issue to light for two different Kia models, QL Sportage MY2016-2021 and the CK Stinger MY2017-2019.

The defect can affect any of the 57,000 people who own the vehicles urgently being recalled.

It follows after the Hyundai recalled 93,000 vehicles over a similar issue.

A defect can happen if the system controlling the Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Stability Control System and Traction Control System can experience an electrical short-circuit if water enters it.

Anyone who owns the popular car is being urgently advised to park as far away from their homes or indoor structures and especially away from anything flammable.

Consumers have been told to contact their local Kia branch so that they can arrange for a car inspection and a repair, if necessary.

The inspections and repairs will be completed free of charge.

Kia is currently trying to contact all affected vehicle owners.

The Kia QL Sportage was sold between 2016-2021, and there are 56,203 people who own the car model.

Only 1648 own a Kia CK Stinger that was sold between 2017-2019.
