Leading the pack with an unprecedented 16 nominations, Sinners, a Segregation-era thriller starring Michael B Jordan, has cemented its status as the premier contender for this year’s Academy Awards.

The haul positions the Warner Bros production as the frontrunner heading into the March 15 Oscars, where it will compete for best picture against One Battle After AnotherFrankenstein, HamnetMarty Supreme and several other contenders.

The previous record for most nominations in a single year was 14, achieved by All About EveTitanic and La La Land

Oscar winners will be selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, whose voting body comprises approximately 10,000 actors, producers, directors and film craftspeople.

The ceremony will be broadcast by Walt Disney’s ABC, with comedian Conan O’Brien returning as host for a second consecutive year.

Warner Bros Discovery led all studios with a total of 30 nominations, as the company remains the subject of a bidding war involving Netflix and Paramount Skydance.

Netflix has never managed to snag an Oscar despite nominations for RomaEmilia Perez and The Irishman,

But it has a chance this year with Frankenstein, which received nine nominations.
