Kesha Oayda has made Australian Idol history, crowned the 2026 winner in a heartfelt grand finale that delivered big performances, bigger emotions and a long-awaited milestone for female artists.
The 21-year-old emerged victorious after a two-part finale that saw her go head-to-head with fellow finalists Harlan Goode, 18, and Kalani Artis, 23. In doing so, Kesha became the first woman to win the competition in more than 18 years – ending a drought that stretched back to 2007.
Fighting back tears as confetti fell, Kesha thanked the show’s crew, judges and fans, telling viewers she was overwhelmed by the support. “Everyone who has voted for me – thank you,” she said, visibly emotional as the result was announced.
The finale itself was a showcase of the season’s strongest talent. Kalani was the first to be eliminated from the top three, leaving Kesha and Harlan as the final two. Both returned to the stage to perform the songs that launched their Idol journeys – a fitting full-circle moment.
Harlan delivered a powerful rendition of ABBA’s The Winner Takes It All, while Kesha stunned with Die With A Smile by Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga, underlining the artistry and confidence that had made her a standout throughout the competition.
Judges Marcia Hines, Kyle Sandilands and Amy Shark were full of praise for both finalists, but it was Shark’s glowing endorsement of Kesha that hinted at the outcome.
“You are the most talented, coolest chick I’ve seen on Australian Idol so far,” she said.
The win sparked a wave of celebration among fans, many of whom were thrilled to see a female artist take the crown again after nearly two decades.
“The drought has been broken – very well deserved,” one viewer wrote online, capturing the mood of a large section of the audience.
While some fans had been backing Harlan, particularly after his emotional duet with former Idol star Anthony Callea on The Prayer, which left viewers in tears, the overall sentiment was one of excitement for what Kesha’s victory represents.
Across the two-night finale, all three finalists had moments to shine. Kalani teamed up with Pete Murray for a moving performance of Better Days after tackling David Bowie’s Heroes, while Kesha impressed with Adele’s When We Were Young before sharing the stage with Vanessa Amorosi on Shine. Harlan, meanwhile, showcased his vocal control and emotional depth across multiple performances, cementing his status as one of the season’s breakout stars.
The final night also featured a celebratory return from the top 12 contestants, who joined the finalists for a group performance of Donna Lewis’ I Love You Always Forever before the last performances and winner announcement.
For Kesha, the victory marks the beginning of a new chapter. As the 2026 Idol winner, she takes home $100,000 in prize money along with an exclusive recording package with Hive Sound Studios. She will also attend a songwriting camp with Sony Music Publishing and receive marketing and social media support, plus VIP experiences at the ARIA Awards and TV WEEK Logie Awards.
