Former Channel Nine presenter Amber Sherlock has claimed she was pushed out of the network because of her age, after being made redundant late last year.
The long-time 9News presenter and weather reporter, who was let go in November just weeks before her 50th birthday, told the Stellar podcast Something To Talk About that she believes she was aged out of the network.
“I always joked that Channel Nine wouldn’t have a 50-year-old weather presenter. Who knew I was being prophetic?” Sherlock said.
“It’s disappointing. I feel like women in their 50s have so much to give, but even though we’ve come so far [in this industry], there aren’t many women over 50 in full-time camera-facing roles on Australian TV.
“I wasn’t on the huge salaries that perhaps some of the stars were making. So I don’t think it was a financial reason. It’s unfortunate. I think the people that have gone on and are stepping into the role I was doing are 10 to 15 years younger than me.”
However, a spokesperson for Nine told Yahoo Lifestyle that Sherlock’s departure was not related to her age, but to a broader restructure.
“Nine does not discriminate against any individual on the basis of age or any other factor,” they began.
“We strongly reject any suggestion that this influences any decision to remove a role that is no longer required in our business.
“The dedicated role of the 6pm weather presenter for 9News Sydney was made redundant in November 2025.
“Since then, a number of different reporters and presenters have presented the 6pm weather in addition to filling other roles across the network.”
The network continues to employ several high-profile women over 50, including Catriona Rowntree, Livinia Nixon and Deborah Knight.
Sherlock first spoke publicly about her exit in November after an unexpected on-air farewell from Georgie Gardner.
She later shared a message on Instagram reflecting on her time at the network, saying it had been a privilege to be in viewers’ homes for nearly two decades.
She also spoke about the roles she had held across multiple news bulletins, including the 6pm Sydney news team alongside Peter Overton and James Bracey.
“I’ve enjoyed 30 years in Australian television built on hard work, grit and resilience and have always believed that dedication pays off,” she said at the time
“While I was offered the possibility of a few other roles, it makes sense to step away now and look at something fresh.”
