Bunnings are launching free DIY workshops for children across Australia every weekend in February.

Michelle Walter, the head of community, partnerships and events for the hardware store, said the events were launched with the intention of getting kids to work with their hands and off screens.

“It’s those small moments that help turn creativity into a habit,” she said.

The workshops are part of Bunnings’ DIY Passport program, a booklet that tracks all the free workshops that kids attend at the store.

“The new Kids DIY Passport is about giving kids something to look forward to each time they come back into store, whether that’s collecting a stamp, trying a new activity or sharing a treat at our Bunnings Cafes,” Michelle said.

Last weekend, kids got to make a frog hotel, and this weekend they will get to play with paints and squeegees.

“Squeegee art is a unique and exciting way to create patterns and expressive shapes,” Bunnings wrote on their website.

Next weekend (Feb 21 and 22) children will get to make a “magic garden”, and on the final weekend they will create wooden robots.

The free workshops will go for around an hour and child-safe arts and crafts items will be provided during these workshops.

Bunnings said booking ahead on their website is essential to secure a spot and times vary according to local shops.
