The world’s top retirement destination for 2026 has been revealed, with Greece claiming the number one spot in International Living’s Annual Global Retirement Index.

The index evaluates destinations across cost of living, healthcare, housing, visas, climate and ease of integration. Greece topped the list, followed by Panama, Costa Rica, Portugal, Mexico, Italy, France, Spain, Thailand and Malaysia.

“Greece’s rise to number one marks a shift in Europe’s retirement landscape. For years, Portugal and Spain led the way, but recent visa changes and rising costs have retirees looking elsewhere,” Jennifer Stevens the executive editor of International Living said.

“Greece now offers what many are seeking – a beautiful, welcoming, and affordable European base with accessible residency options and a lifestyle that feels rich in every sense”.

A key attraction is Greece’s Golden Visa program, which grants a residence permit to foreigners who make a minimum investment of €250,000 ($A440,000).

The country also boasts more than 300 days of sunshine each year, making it ideal for those who love the outdoors.

Costs remain one of the key factors for retirees, with a three-course meal for two at a mid-range restaurant costing around €50 ($A90), while a coffee is about €3.43 ($A6), roughly comparable to Australian prices.

Online influencers have also commented on the affordability, with TikToker Renae Smith saying: I paid £2,200 ($A4,400) a month for rent in the UK – plus, Council Tax which was, I think, £240 ($A480) a month. But now, I pay just €800 ($A1,400) on rent and bills each month in Greece.”

Greece’s more than 6,000 islands offer a wide range of destinations, from popular spots like Santorini to hidden gems such as Thassos, which features historical sites like the Ancient Agora and plenty of local activities.

From May 13 next year, there will also be more flights to four new Greek destinations including Chania, Mykonos, Rhodes and Zakynthos through Wizz Airlines. Flights to Mykonos will run three times a week, while the other three destinations will get flights twice a week, with fares starting from £44.99 ($A90) per person.
