Google has released its list of Australia’s top recipe searches for 2025, showing what home cooks were curious about over the past year. The results show a mix of old favourites, internet trends and a few unexpected newcomers.
Hot cross buns
Hot cross buns remain a firm favourite. Despite supermarkets stocking them almost immediately after Christmas, many Australians are still searching for ways to bake their own. While plenty of us never quite get around to buying the currants and mixed spice, the interest is strong.
Pink salt trick
The “pink salt diet trick” spread quickly thanks to influencers on TikTok and YouTube. The “pink salt trick” is a drink made by mixing small amounts of pink Himalayan salt with warm water and lemon juice. Some versions add ingredients like apple cider vinegar, ginger, honey or turmeric.
Influencers claimed it helps with weight loss, bloating and sleep. However, health experts have cautioned that there is no strong evidence for these benefits, and that adding extra salt to your diet should be done carefully.
Dubai chocolate
Dubai-style chocolate is inspired by a much-loved Middle Eastern dessert called knafeh. The chocolate includes pistachio cream, tahini, and crunchy pastry inside a milk chocolate shell. Because buying the original can be expensive, many Australians searched for homemade versions. Some recipes are traditional, while others use shortcuts like shredded wheat.
Easter recipes
Searches for “Easter recipes” brought up everything from lamb roasts and glazed salmon to hot cross scones and even hot cross bun tiramisu loaf. Clearly, Easter cooking continues to be a highlight on Australian tables.
Pornstar martini
This fruity cocktail, created more than 20 years ago by mixologist Douglas Ankrah, with some bars now calling it a “passionfruit martini” as its key ingredients include passionfruit liqueur, vodka and champagne.
Japanese mounjaro
This is another trending wellness drink, inspired by the prescription weight-loss drug Mounjaro. The “natural mounjaro” recipes online claim to support weight loss and digestion, though there is little scientific backing. The homemade versions usually include lemon juice, ginger, raw honey and apple cider vinegar. Some add cinnamon or cayenne pepper. Like the pink salt trend, experts recommend approaching it with caution.
Bacon dessert
Bacon found its way into sweet dishes this year. The idea is that the salty, smoky flavour pairs surprisingly well with ice cream, chocolate or caramel. Chefs like Heston Blumenthal helped popularise the idea years ago, and it has resurfaced thanks to social media predictions of a “bacon boom.”
Cloud cake
Cloud cake is a very light, airy dessert that is often flourless, which makes it suitable for gluten-intolerant cooks. Online recipes promise a cake that is “as light as a cloud.” Popular versions include Nigella Lawson’s chocolate cloud cake and Poh Ling Yeow’s lemon cloud cake.
Ninja slushie
The term “Ninja slushie” likely relates to the Ninja Slushi Professional Frozen Drink Maker. With its higher price point and promise of perfect frozen drinks, it sparked plenty of recipe searches. People used it to make everything from frozen cocktails to milkshakes.
Turkish pasta
One of the biggest surprise entries was Turkish pasta, driven by Australia-based influencer Anna Paul. Her mother’s recipe, featuring beef mince cooked with spices and served over yoghurt sauce, gained more than 2.3 million likes, with the influencer saying it “only takes as long as it takes pasta to cook.”
