Police have confirmed they are now searching for a body in the ongoing hunt for alleged cop killer Dezi Freeman.

The specialist taskforce investigating the disappearance of the 56-year-old – who also goes by Desmond Filby – conducted another targeted operation in Mount Buffalo National Park over the past week.

Freeman has been on the run since August 26, when he allegedly shot and killed two police officers in Porepunkah, about 300km northeast of Melbourne.

Investigators believe he may have fled into the national park, which is not far from his home.

Across five days, officers carried out line searches and examined caves in the rugged terrain but found no trace of the fugitive.

The same area was previously searched on September 12 while Freeman was believed to be armed. Police now say the most recent operation focused on gathering evidence – or recovering his body.

Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim de Waart-Hottart were killed, and a third officer seriously injured, when Freeman allegedly opened fire as police served a warrant.

He is also accused of attempting to kill a fourth officer by pointing a gun at him and pulling the trigger, though the firearm did not discharge.

Since the deadly ambush, hundreds of officers and specialist resources from Victoria, Australia and New Zealand have combed Porepunkah, Mount Buffalo National Park and surrounding regions.

Police say they have reviewed more than 1950 pieces of intelligence, including public tip-offs.

A $1 million reward remains in place for information leading to Freeman’s arrest.

Despite four months without a confirmed sighting, Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Martin O’Brien said the search effort will not diminish.

“We will continue to conduct targeted searches such as this one based on intelligence,” he said.

“We will maintain a presence in the community, and we are determined we will see this to resolution.

“Once again, I would strongly urge anyone with any information at all to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers.”
