My Kitchen Rules judge Manu Feildel has stunned viewers with a graphic hunting scene in his new Channel 7 travel series Off The Grid, which he co-hosts with fellow chef Colin Fassnidge.
The show follows the pair as they travel around New Zealand in a caravan for a month, a project Manu recently told Yahoo Lifestyle is “one of the most enjoyable” he’s ever worked on.
In Wednesday night’s episode, the duo visited Poronui Lodge on the North Island, where they hunted deer with guide Vincent Elliott. Manu took the lead, crouching on a hill with a gun before successfully shooting a deer.
“Holy s**t,” Colin exclaimed as the moment unfolded.
The three men celebrated with high-fives and hugs, before Manu and the guide walked down to the deer, gutted it and carried it back to the vehicle.
“Killing it was the easy thing,” Manu said. “I feel like a butcher.”
While the pair were thrilled in the episode, many viewers were left shocked and divided over the moment, describing it on social media as “sad” and “hard to watch”.
“I can’t believe Manu just shot a deer on Off The Grid and they put it on TV,” one viewer wrote.
“I knew that was coming and left the room,” said another.
“I couldn’t watch, so I went outside for ten minutes,” a third added.
Others shared they “did not like watching that part” or simply “turned it off”.
However, some viewers defended the moment, pointing out the reality behind eating meat.
“Not sure what the problem is. Where do you think all our meat products come from?” one person wrote.
“What’s wrong with that? If you eat meat, you do realise animals die,” said another.
“Maybe cooking shows aren’t for you if you don’t like seeing reality of where our food comes from,” someone else added.
Another viewer noted the scene showed the proper way to hunt: “A quick, clean kill.”
Speaking to Yahoo Lifestyle, Manu said he enjoyed filming Off The Grid because it allowed him and Colin to show their true personalities.
“I think MKR is a different side of us. The real side of us is what you’re going to see on Off The Grid,” he said.
