Police have released CCTV footage of two men accused of vandalising the Anzac Memorial in Sydney’s Hyde Park by spraying an oil-based substance across its walls, steps and floor.

Chief Inspector Gary Coffey described the attack on the heritage-listed site as “disgusting,” estimating the clean-up could cost up to $20,000.

The men, both middle-aged, were captured on camera spending around 20 minutes at the memorial on Thursday, September 4, appearing to casually spray the substance.

Coffey said they even spoke with staff during their time there before leaving together and walking north through Hyde Park.

Cleaners remain at the site attempting to remove the damage, though Coffey said the oil had caused “permanent” staining to the granite.

“The war memorial is a sacred site to our community and to do this is absolutely disgusting,” he said.

“Their actions to my mind were certainly deliberate.

“Someone will know them and they should be held accountable for their actions.”

The first man is described as Caucasian, aged 50–60, with a large build and black and grey hair.

He was wearing black sunglasses, a red and black checked long-sleeve shirt over a blue striped shirt, light shorts, black boots with black socks and was carrying a red shopping bag cart.

The second man is also described as Caucasian, aged 50–60, with a solid build and shaved head.

He was wearing a dark blue button-up shirt, dark jeans and black sneakers with white trim, and carrying a brown and black man bag.

Police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
