TV presenter Catriona Rowntree has shared a heartfelt tribute to her dear friend, renowned South Australian gardener and wedding venue owner Ruth Irving, following her death at the age of 71.
Known affectionately as the “Ru” of Al Ru Farm, Irving transformed a simple sheep paddock into one of Australia’s most celebrated wedding venues. Her gardens, vision and warmth touched countless lives across the state and beyond.
“My heart is sore, as I pay tribute to my beautiful friend Ruth Irving, who recently passed away,” Rowntree wrote on Instagram, alongside photos from her years filming Getaway. “I met Ruth on a Getaway story many moons ago, filming the incredible garden Ruth created alongside her husband Alan. That will continue, as will her legacy of sharing her encyclopaedic knowledge of plants and entertaining.”
The TV host described herself as “blessed” to have known Irving, remembering her as a woman who lived a “big, adventurous, beautiful life”.
“I miss you so much Ruth,” she added. “Your touch is everywhere around my home and I’m so grateful to have had you as my friend.”
Tributes from the wider community soon followed, many reflecting on the lasting impact of Al Ru Farm. One follower recalled being married there in 1996, calling the day “magical and so beautiful”. Others described Irving as a “local legend”, while one mourner called the farm itself Ruth’s “gift to the world”.
One bride-to-be shared how Irving personally ensured her wedding went ahead despite storm clouds, remembering her as “so giving and talented”.
Rowntree responded to the outpouring of love with gratitude: “Thank you for sharing this story, confirming the gift a garden can give and why Ruth’s legacy will long live on.”
Irving’s passing leaves behind not only the beauty of Al Ru Farm, but also a community of family, friends, and visitors who will forever carry her memory in their hearts.
