Port Adelaide chairman and Sunrise host David Koch has accused the AFL of favouritism for Melbourne-based clubs following Richmond’s 89-point grand final win against the GWS Giants.
Speaking to FIVEaa Radio on Tuesday, Koch said the MCG’s environment provided an unfair advantage to Richmond.
“I did think whenever Richmond scored a goal, I’d hear the roar of the tiger on the scoreboard,” Koch said.
“I’m not sure you’re supposed to do that when it’s a final. It’s not a Richmond home game.”
Koch is the latest figure to question the AFL’s decision to hold the final game at the MCG, where the large majority of the 100,014 spectators in attendance were the Tigers fans.
Koch said he, Crows chairman Rob Chapman and other non-Victorian presidents have to keep reminding the AFL executives that “there is no ‘V’ in ‘AFL’”.
“We’ve got to be vigilant because the Victorians can get really cocky about this stuff, that’s it’s the home of football. It is not the home of football, it is a national sport that is right the way around the country.”
The AFL has committed to play the grand final at the MCG until at least 2057 after signing a $500 million package deal with the Victorian government last year.
