Hey Hey It’s Saturday star John Blackman has updated fans on his health following a surgery at Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital.

The comedian, who is known for voicing Dickie Knee on the show, said he is “in no pain” and could now “finally see a glimmer of light at the end of a very long and dark tunnel” after undergoing an operation to start the process of getting teeth and a lower lip.

The surgery came more than the year after his 10-hour surgery in 2018, in which Blackman had his jaw removed and replaced with a thigh bone due to a type of skin cancer called basal cell carcinoma on his chin.

“A million thanks for your messages of support,” the 72-year-old wrote on Twitter. “Also to the angels at The Alfred – the best hospital in the world, my plastic surgeon, Frank Bruscino-Raiola & my dentist, Ian Hewson! I can now finally see a glimmer of light at the end of a very long & dark tunnel!”

In an interview with A Current Affair, Blackman said doctors warned that surgery to his face could alter his voice and end his career.

“To perform, you have to look good, you have to sound good, you have to sound confident and be confident,” he said.

“I just won’t be able to do that anymore. Life without doing that is just so alien to me. I mean, I don’t know what I’m going to do.”

However, the TV veteran hoped to be “back to normal” in September.

“I’m a pretty determined sort of a guy, determined I will be back in front of a crowd and back in front of a microphone.”
