Chris Sebastian has broken his silence following his controversial win on The Voice Australia 2020.
The shock result, which saw the younger brother of coach Guy Sebastian take home $100,000 and a recording contract with EMI Music, led many viewers to call the singing competition “rigged”.
Chris won the public voting with “less than 0.5 per cent separating first and second place”, according to Nine.
He took to Instagram on Monday morning to thank fans for supporting him.
“I have no words, to everyone who voted for me thank you so so much! I love you all,” Chris wrote.
“This season of the voice has been one of the greatest things to ever happen to me and this means more to me than anyone knows.”
He said he acknowledged the dissent on social media, but referred back to the result of the popular vote that saw him defeat fellow contestants Stellar Perry, Siala Robson, and Johnny Manuel in the finale.
“I love that the votes were close,” Chris told Nine. “I would have conceded to any one of those three artists.”
He said he felt validated from his victory on the show.
“I haven’t had that level of validation from the public, so I guess this public vote shows people are accepting of me and what I do. That for me is really important,” he said.
“I did this for Australia’s approval, in a way.
“The thing I am taking away from this, and why I feel so great right now, is because I did this for the people who were voting for me. They’re the people that I am going to focus on.”
Chris said his brother Guy, the 2003 winner of Australian Idol and fifth-placer at the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest, joked to him after the Sunday win: “So, we’re pretty good at winning TV shows, hey?”
In a 2016 interview with The Music, Chris said his stint on The Voice Season 1 in 2012 was a “crappy” experience as he found himself under his brother’s shadow.
“They did a lot of things that they weren’t meant to, like after my performance they played my brother’s song. And the whole point was for me to have my own identity… So it was a bit of a crappy experience,” he told the outlet.
