An emotional Richard Wilkinsons says Anzac Day is a “bittersweet” day in his family as he shared photographs of his father and grandfather.
The Weekend Today host said both men served in the armed forces.
He showed the Today audience a few photos of his dad, Anthony Richard Wilkins, during his time at pilot training in Vancouver, Canada, at 21-years-old, before sharing an image of his grandad on his way to Gallipoli.
“It’s always a bitter-sweet day in our family,” Wilkins said.
“Because it’s my son Christian’s birthday today, but my grandfather and dad both served…sorry,” he added, welling up.
“Don’t apologise,” news present Sophie Walsh said.
“It’s an emotional day of everyone. All families across Australia. It’s beautiful you shared those photos with us,” she told him.
Dawn services have been held across the country for the first time since 2019, with thousands coming together to mark the day.
