Kaitlin Jones, the hairdresser who was stabbed on a Queensland beach earlier this week, has spoken publicly for the first time since the attack.

The 23-year-old was sunbathing when a 16-year-old boy allegedly stabbed her, resulting in injuries to her head, neck, chest and arms. Jones remains in serious but stable condition after being rushed to hospital following the attack.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested following the attack, and charged with acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm. Detective Inspector Tom Armitt said it appeared to be a “random attack”. The teen was refused bail and appeared in Mackay Children’s Court on Tuesday.

A friend of Kaitlin’s, Nic Gal, has set up a  GoFundMe  in order to raise money to support Kaitlin and her partner Dylan through Kaitlin’s recovery and time off work, which has already raised over $12,000.

About the fundraiser, Gal wrote, “This tragic event has left her in a serious but stable condition in hospital and unable to work. By donating to Kaitlin and Dylan we will be able to make this hard time a little less stressful for them both so they can focus on Kaitlin getting back to 100%.”

Responding to Gal’s Facebook post about the fundraiser, Jones wrote, “Thank you so much Nic, means the world”.

Jones was assisted after her attack by 58-year-old Gavin Odgaard, who heard her cries and ran down to meet her. Talking to 7 News after the attack, he said, “I got down closer to her and I could see the blood on her. And she said ‘help me, help me, help me, I’ve been stabbed. I don’t want to die.”
