Showbiz legend Bert Newton will feature on Aussie screens one last time, as he is farewelled in a state funeral service on Friday morning.
The ceremony will be live-streamed to millions of adoring fans around the country, and will take place at 10am Friday morning at Melbourne’s St Patrick’s Cathedral.
The 83-year-old’s coffin arrived at the church at 8am, with an influx of fully vaccinated friends, family and colleagues expected to begin arriving soon.
Covid-19 restrictions have capped the number of in-person attendees to 500, but many more are expected to be watching on the live-stream.
Eddie McGuire is said to be performing the eulogy, as he said he was “deeply honoured” to be asked by Bert’s wife Patti.
“It comes to me as a kid who used to beg mum and dad to stay up late to watch Bert’s Wheel (on the 1970s variety program The Don Lane Show),” broadcaster McGuire said.
“I’m deeply honoured that Patti asked me to speak on her behalf, and that Bert was keen for me to do it.”
Musical theatre star Rhonda Burchmore will also be involved in the ceremony, as she will read a Bible passage at the start of the proceedings.
Bert and Patti’s children, Lauren and Matthew, have written messages which will be read at the service.
Both Channel 9 and Channel 10 will be live-streaming the service on their online platforms, as those who sign up with the streaming services can watch for free.
Bert died on October 30th from complications after having his leg amputated, after a long and difficult battle with a variety of health issues.
