The future of Nine’s flagship breakfast show Today is under intense scrutiny, with speculation mounting over who will step into the seat left vacant by Karl Stefanovic following his sudden departure from the network.
After more than two decades as one of Australian television’s most recognisable morning faces, Stefanovic’s exit has left a major hole in Nine’s breakfast line-up, and insiders say the race to replace him is already well underway.
According to multiple reports, Nine is looking both internally and externally for a new co-host to join Sarah Abo, though her own future is also reportedly uncertain amid expected parental leave later this year.
Among the leading contenders is Tom Steinfort, who has already been filling in during Stefanovic’s absence. The former 60 Minutes reporter is seen as a natural fit, with many viewers familiar with his on-air style.
Also in the mix is David Campbell, the longtime host of Today Extra. Industry insiders reportedly view Campbell as a strong option thanks to his polished presenting style and established connection with Nine audiences.
Other names floated include James Bracey, Charles Croucher and Clint Stanaway – all familiar faces within Nine’s stable.
A new wildcard has also emerged in South Australian presenter Brenton Ragless, who reportedly impressed executives during previous fill-in stints and is said to be under serious consideration.
The shake-up comes at a delicate time for Today, with ratings reportedly slipping as rival Sunrise continues to dominate the breakfast battle. Some media analysts warn Nine will need to move quickly to settle on a permanent host if it wants to steady the ship and win back viewers.
For now, Nine is staying tight-lipped. But one thing is certain: replacing Karl won’t be easy. Love him or loathe him, his larrikin energy and headline-making style shaped breakfast TV for a generation, and whoever takes over will inherit some very big shoes.
