Karl Stefanovic has broken his silence after Nine confirmed his shock departure from the network, ending a 26-year run that made him one of Australia’s most recognisable TV personalities.

The sudden exit follows fierce backlash over Stefanovic’s independent podcast interview with controversial British figure Tommy Robinson, an episode that was quickly pulled offline and prompted crisis talks inside the network. Nine stressed it had no editorial involvement in the podcast but said it was taking the matter seriously.

In a video message posted after the news broke, Stefanovic thanked viewers, colleagues and supporters, saying he was “grateful for every moment” of his long career at Nine and proud of the relationships he had built along the way.

“It’s been the ride of a lifetime,” he said, reflecting on more than two decades on Australian television.

He also spoke warmly of the audiences who had welcomed him into their homes each morning, saying their loyalty had “meant everything” to him, and described his time at Nine as something he would “cherish forever”.

But it was his final sign-off that left the strongest impression.

“I’m free,” Stefanovic declared. “Truly independent.”

Then, in a moment that seemed pure Karl, he flashed a cheeky wink to the camera before jogging out of frame and leaping into the air, clicking his heels together in a playful show of liberation.

The theatrical exit has only added to speculation that the veteran broadcaster may now throw himself into podcasting and radio, following the launch of The Karl Stefanovic Show earlier this year.

For many Australians, Stefanovic’s departure marks the end of an era. He first joined Nine in 2000 and became the face of the Today show in 2005, guiding the breakfast program through ratings wars, public controversies and countless co-host changes.

While his next move remains unclear, supporters have flooded social media with messages of encouragement, with many calling for him to return to screens in some form.

Love him or loathe him, Karl Stefanovic has never been one to leave quietly – and his final bow was no exception.
