Comedian and broadcaster Dave “Hughesy” Hughes has revealed he recently underwent surgery to remove five skin cancers, sharing a candid update with fans before heading straight to a comedy show.
In a video posted to social media, Hughes appeared shirtless with fresh bandages on his chest, back and arms as he prepared to travel to a performance in regional Victoria.
“I had five skin cancers cut off today,” he told followers.
Despite the procedure, Hughes said he was determined to make it to his show in Cowes.
“It’s a two-and-a-half hour drive away, I’ve gotta get there tonight, the people need me,” he quipped.
“If I don’t go, they don’t have fun and I don’t get paid. But you know what? It’s a gig economy, I could have a month off but I can’t.”
The comedian later captioned the video: “What’s 45 stitches between friends? The Big V erases the pain.”
The latest procedure is not Hughes’ first experience with skin cancer.
He has previously undergone surgery to remove skin cancers, including procedures in 2016 and 2020.
Speaking to the Herald Sun in 2020, Hughes said: “I got my skin checked and had a couple of cancers cut out.
“There were parts that had to be sliced and diced, but I’m all good.
“My skin is not meant for this climate, I always joke I should be in Ireland picking potatoes.
“My wife [Holly] is always is banging on to me about getting my skin checked. She wants to keep me alive, which is nice.”
Fans were quick to send well wishes following his latest update, while many also used the post as a reminder about the importance of regular skin checks.
“Good reminder mate to go and get my skin checked again,” one follower wrote.
Another commented: “Wear sunscreen kids”.
