Dancing with the Stars line-up revealed

<p>A star-studded cast of celebrities have been unveiled for this year's Dancing with the Stars, with some unexpected names in the mix. </p> <p>Four-time Gold Logie-winning actress Lisa McCune will be showing her moves on the dance floor, as will <em>Masterchef Season 1</em> winner Julie Goodwin.</p> <p>AFL legend and 7NEWS Sport presenter Ben Cousins and <em>Home and Away </em>hunk James Stewart will also be putting on their dance shoes, as will <em>SAS Australia </em>ex-special forces officer Ant Middleton. </p> <p><em>Better Homes and Gardens</em>’ DIY guru Adam Dovile  is also set to flaunt his moves, right after BHG's Charlie Albone’s appearance on the show last year. </p> <p>Model and designer Nadia Bartel,  Olympian and former senator Nova Peris, AFL star Shane Crawford, comedian Nikki Osborn, singer Samantha Jade and TV cook Hayden Quinn are also competing for the Mirror Ball Trophy. </p> <p>Each celebrity will be competing for their chosen charities and chance to win the coveted trophy. </p> <p>Although fans had to say goodbye to Daryl Somers last year, they are in for a treat this year, with TV vet Dr Chris Brown set to co-host the show alongside Sonia Kruger.</p> <p>The judges for this year are: Craig Revel Horwood, Sharna Burgess, Helen Richey and Mark Wilson.</p> <p><em>Image: 7News</em></p>

Darryl Somers jumps the gun with major Dr Chris Brown announcement

<p>Darryl Somers, the man who made <em>Dancing with the Stars</em> a glittering extravaganza of dance and dazzling outfits, has decided to take centre stage once again.</p> <p>After months of speculation about Dr Chris Brown taking over the hosting reins, Somers took it upon himself to make a rogue announcement on his Facebook page that was about as expected as a cha-cha-cha in a tango.</p> <p>Rumours have been swirling for some time now about Channel Seven's big reveal, scheduled for their upfronts event, a time when media executives and TV buffs gather to find out what fresh television delights are in store. But Somers, always one to seize the spotlight, decided to drop the bombshell himself.</p> <p>"Hi All, Just want to confirm the speculation that I will not be hosting Dancing With The Stars in 2024. Seven let me know recently that they have signed Chris Brown to the network full-time, and amongst his commitments, he will be hosting DWTS," Somers wrote on Facebook.</p> <p>In a heartfelt message, Somers went on to share his gratitude for the 20-year journey he's had with <em>Dancing with the Stars</em>, dating back to 2004. He's completed ten series, with his last one being a "huge ratings success". And what better way to pass the torch than with a mirror ball, the symbol of dancefloor triumph, presented personally by Somers to Chris Brown.</p> <p>Somers also expressed his fondness for his co-host, Sonia Kruger, and the judges, Todd McKenney and Mark Wilson. It seems that while he will miss the sequins and glitter, he's "now unencumbered to pursue the projects [he] put on hold during Covid and shall have some exciting news on that score early next year." We can't wait to find out what Somers has hidden up his well-tailored sleeves. </p> <p>But let's not forget the man of the hour: Dr Chris Brown. Not only will he be grooving to the tunes of <em>Dancing with the Stars</em>, but he's also going to be hosting a brand new show titled <em>Dream Home</em>. It's not about dreaming of a dream home; it's about couples turning a run-down shack into a palace, all while winning some cold hard cash. If we know Brown, he's probably going to charm the participants into renovating their homes with just a smile and a stethoscope.</p> <p>Before all of this unfolded, there was speculation that Brown might take over for Kochie when he retired from <em>Sunrise</em> after 21 years – but of course that Big Chair went to Olympian Matt Shirvington.</p> <p>In the world of Australian television, the tango of hosting changes continues, with Somers' premature announcement adding an unexpected twist. Kylie Minogue drops big career news

<p>Kylie Minogue is set to return to TV with her own special that will highlight her incredible career. </p> <p>The iconic singer will feature in British broadcaster ITV's <em>An Audience With… </em>show at The Royal Albert Hall in London. </p> <p>"It's been hard to keep this one a secret... I can't wait to share this moment with you all."</p> <p>The singer will perform some of her top hits including her more recent chart topper <em>Padam Padam </em>and a few favourites from  her award-winning back catalogue.</p> <p>This comes just two years after ITV did the special for Adele, which was met with overwhelming success, reaching over 5.4 million viewers during its peak. </p> <p>Tickets for the show will be on sale from September 8.</p> <p><em>Image: Getty</em></p>

Dancing With The Stars winner crowned!

<p>After five weeks of dancing up a storm, the winner of <em>Dancing With The Stars</em> has been crowned. </p> <p>The finale came down to an actress and a singer going head-to-head, with the mirrorball trophy awarded to the champion at the end of the epic battle.</p> <p>The two finalists were <em>Home &amp; Away</em> star Emily Weir, and Human Nature singer Phil Burton, with Burton emerging victorious to win the show’s 20th season.</p> <p>“This show has just been so incredible for the last seven weeks. I’ve had the absolute time of my life. And, you know, it is a competition but it doesn’t feel like it when you are out here and you are with all these amazing people. Sudden exit leaves Dancing With the Stars viewers stunned

<p>Fans of <em>Dancing With the Stars</em> were left in shock as celebrity chef Matt Preston made an unexpected decision to quit the show on Sunday night, creating a first in the series' history.</p> <p>After finding himself in the bottom two and facing a dance-off against former AFL star Gavin Wanganeen to secure his spot in the competition, the former <em>MasterChef</em> judge interrupted host Daryl Somers to drop a bombshell announcement.</p> <p>“I’ve loved everything about this, but my ankle is cooked,” Preston revealed to Somers and co-host Sonia Kruger.</p> <p>“I can’t dance again tonight so what I want to do is to concede and give the win to Gavin, who did brilliantly today and I’m so proud to be doing this for you, brother.”</p> <p>Somers, clearly taken aback, expressed that such a situation had never occurred before and invited the judges to share their thoughts on Preston's decision.</p> <p>“I mean, injuries happen and there’s nothing you can do about that,” Craig Revel Horwood said.</p> <p>“I’ve been a dancer all my life, if you’re injured you shouldn’t dance on an injury – so Matt, I think you’ve made the right decision. Sad to see you go, but Gavin, darling welcome, for you get another life on the show now.”</p> <p>“You’re absolutely doing the right thing and thank you for giving us determination and your courage, you’ve been wonderful,” Sharna Burgess agreed.</p> <p>“And I’m gonna give you a big hug after the show.”</p> <p>During a recent candid interview on the Stellar podcast "Something To Talk About," Preston shed light on his motivation for joining the dancing competition in the first place, explaining his desire to step far outside his comfort zone.</p> <p>“An opportunity like <em>Dancing</em> comes along and you go, ‘I don’t need to do it.’ And then you go, ‘Well, let’s have a crack,’” he said.</p> <p>“There’s one word that I keep hearing a lot from certain people of a certain age who’ve achieved a lot, and that’s the fear of ‘humiliation’. Dancing with the Stars cast revealed

<p>The full cast of the upcoming season of <em>Dancing with the Stars</em> has been revealed, with the contestants ready for their foray into the world of glitz and glamour. </p> <p>This year, the contestants range from athletes and musicians, to reality TV personalities and niche experts in food and quizzing. </p> <p>Matt Preston, food critic and former judge on <em>MasterChef Australia</em> will be making his TV comeback in the new season, as he swaps his taste testing for tap shoes. </p> <p>Preston, who left Network Ten in 2019, took to Instagram with a photo of himself on the set for the show, as the caption read, “So, time for something totally new and way out of my comfort zone!”</p> <p>Joining Preston in the star-studded cast is former <em>Bachelor</em> winner Laura Bryne, <em>The Chase Australia</em> quizmaster Issa Schultz, and Australian actors Mary Coustas, Christie Whelan Browne, Emily Weir, Virginia Gay and Pia Miranda.</p> <blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Dancing with the Stars still searching for stars

<p>As <em>Dancing with the Stars</em> prepares to return to screens in 2023, it seems the upcoming season of the show is already in dire straits. </p> <p>Channel Seven announced the show would be making its comeback to the network, originally airing from 2004 to 2015, before losing broadcasting rights to Network 10 from 2019 to 2020.</p> <p>Now, more than two years after the pandemic delayed the network's plans for the show's resurrection, a source told <a href="https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/entertainment/television/dancing-with-the-stars-is-still-searching-for-stars-ahead-of-2023-season/news-story/659b91f31f4f732221908810f2db12eb" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>The Daily Telegraph</em></a> that the show is reportedly struggling to secure big name talent for the new season.</p> <p>Many personalities already contracted to Channel Seven have confirmed they will be sitting out the dancing program, ruling out any possibility of taking to centre stage for the 2023 season. </p> <p>Dr Chris Brown, who recently jumped ship from Channel 10, will be wrapping up in Africa for his co-hosting role on <em>I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here</em>, while former <em>Sunrise</em> host Sam Armytage is also a firm no after being promoted to the helm of <em>Farmer Wants a Wife</em>.</p> <p>Armytage previously appeared on the show in 2011, making it to week nine of the competition despite week's of consistently low scores from the judges.</p> <p>Also unwilling to put on his dancing shoes is sports news reader Matt Shirvington, and with production of the show only two months away, it is predicted that the cast will not be announced until the final hour. </p> <p>No judges have been confirmed to appear on the series at this time, however many suspect we may see veteran judges Todd McKenney, Helen Richey and Paul Mercurio make an appearance or two. </p> <p>Former hosts Sonia Kruger and Daryl Somers have also yet to confirm if they will be returning. </p> <p><em>Image credits: Seven / Instagram</em></p>

"I struggle": Grant Denyer reveals serious health issue

<p dir="ltr">Grant Denyer has opened up about his “fear of not being liked” and “not being good enough” in a candid post.</p> <p dir="ltr">The Gold Logie winner has had to resort to meditation as he continues to struggle with his mental health.</p> <p dir="ltr">He shared an image of himself meditating explaining that this is him “flawed” and how he is fighting to be more accepting of himself.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Meditation isn’t easy for me but it certainly does chill me out more. I really suffer from a racing mind that makes a hell of a lot of noise,” his post began.</p> <p dir="ltr">“My self talk can get pretty savage, I beat myself up, worry about the future, hang on to regrets about the past and get bogged down in fear.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Fear of failure, fear of not being liked, not being good enough. I suffer from perfectionism but with stuff like mediation or self improvement I don’t aim for perfection, just progress.</p> <p dir="ltr">“That is enough. And I go backwards plenty too.</p> <p dir="ltr">“This is not meant to be a preach or a ‘look at how balanced I am’ - it’s an ‘I’m flawed, I have many weaknesses, I struggle’… and I hear you, if you do too.”</p> <p dir="ltr">Denyer is not one to shy away from describing his struggles and had previously spoken about it when he won <em>Dancing With The Stars</em> with his dance partner Lily Cornish.</p> <p dir="ltr">“I’ve spent my life being a smiley television host that pretends everything is OK,” a teary Grant said.</p> <p dir="ltr">“That is not real life. It’s OK to struggle. It’s OK to hurt. It’s OK to reach rock bottom because you can come out of it, you can climb out of it with a bit of love and a little bit of help, and that was the case for me.</p> <p dir="ltr">“I was living the career I had always dreamed of, jumping out of helicopters and wrestling crocodiles. But I'd broken my back and my body was breaking down and I hit a wall.</p> <p dir="ltr">Grant suffered through a painkiller addiction after breaking his back in a terrifying truck accident in 2008 which left him with his vertebrae broken in 11 pieces.</p> <p dir="ltr">“I've said it before, my family saved my life. And that will be the thread that weaves this dance together.</p> <p dir="ltr">“One thing I have learnt is that it's OK to make mistakes. It’s OK to fail and that’s a part of being human.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Whilst that was a very dark period and a hard dance thing to kind of dance to, I just put one foot in front of the other and I’ve climbed my way out of that hole.</p> <p dir="ltr">“I feel a lot of healing here done tonight. Winner crowned for Dancing With The Stars 2022

<p>The Winner of Dancing With The Stars for season 2022 has been crowned, with Grant Denyer taking home the title for the second time.</p> <p>The TV, radio and podcast host, who was paired with dance partner Lily Cornish for the season, described the victory as the “best sensation”.</p> <p>“This show means the world to me, I absolutely love it,” Denyer, aged 44, told the crowd.</p> <p>“If I wasn’t dancing or hosting it, I would be changing the light bulbs in the roof.”</p> <p>“I vowed 15 years ago to never dance again because it was the best memory of my life. I thought I could never top that, so why would you even bother?</p> <p>“I’m so glad I changed my mind and did this, because it’s been the best sensation.”</p> <p>This has been Denyer’s second DWTS win, after scoring the top spot alongside dance partner Amanda Garner in the fourth season in 2006.</p> <p>Performing alongside Denyer on Sunday night were competitors Courtney Act, David Rodan, Deni Hines, Kris Smith and Ricki-Lee Coulter.</p> <p>Denyer, Act and Rodan were all given perfect scores by the judges in the freestyle dance. Ultimately, it was the audience who handed Grant the honour of yet another win. </p> <p>Denyer’s win saw him take home a trophy as well as a cheque for $20,000 for his charity of choice, The Smith Family.</p> <p><em>Images: Channel 7 </em></p>

"It's OK to hurt": Grant Denyer's emotional comeback

<p dir="ltr">Grant Denyer left no dry eye in the audience following an emotional performance on <em>Dancing With The Stars.</em></p> <p dir="ltr">The 44-year-old became emotional after his dance partner Lily Cornish, 22, revealed they would be dancing to Shannon Noll’s <em>Don’t Give Up</em>.</p> <p dir="ltr">He confessed that he hadn’t felt “uncomfortable or nervous or emotionally vulnerable” in a while.</p> <p dir="ltr">“I’ve spent my life being a smiley television host that pretends everything is OK,” Grant began.</p> <p dir="ltr">“That is not real life. It’s OK to struggle. It’s OK to hurt. Sonia Kruger stuns the crowd with racy comments

<p>Plenty of giggles were shared among the crowd at Dancing With The Stars on Sunday night, as host Sonia Kruger shared an explicit joke that had contestants both shocked and roaring with laughter at the same time.</p> <p>The glam host of the very popular and high-energy reality show was catching up with model and presenter Kris Smith and his dancing partner, Siobhan Power, right after their Paso Doble performance – when she asked how his knees were holding up. Smith suffers from early onset osteoarthritis, and has previously revealed he’s had 12 knee operations.</p> <p>“How are your knees, by the way? Do you have a safe word in case things go wrong, like pineapple, or Daryl?” Kruger asked Smith, referring to her co-host Daryl Somers, before dropping a racy gag. “Because my safe word is ‘harder’.”</p> <p>As a stunned Smith laughed along with the crowd, Kruger asked: “Did I go too far then? I think I did!”</p> <p>It wasn’t the only racy moment during Sunday night’s episode. Singer Ricki-Lee Coulter, raised eyebrows with her risqué red satin dress which featured a full skirt with thigh-high slits and a top which appeared to be made up entirely of just straps. Man who helped his father die finds out his fate

<p><strong><em>Warning: This article contains mentions of suicide which may be distressing to some readers</em></strong>.</p> <p>After a lengthy battle against aggressive bowel cancer, in May 2021, Colin Stratton decided he'd had enough.</p> <p>Just a few days shy of his 81st birthday, the loving man asked his family to do something for him.</p> <p>Colin, along with his late wife, had been long term supporters of the voluntary euthanasia bill and members of Dying with Dignity.</p> <p>On May 24th, Colin visited his GP and asked for a suicide pill in order to die on his own terms.</p> <p>When the doctor hold him the paperwork would take up to two weeks, he informed his GP he would simply take matters into his own hands.</p> <p>Impaired from extensive chemotherapy, Colin was unable to complete the task of ending his life by himself.</p> <p>Instead, he asked his 54-year-old son Glenn to help him. Glenn initially refused.</p> <p>“Don’t make me make a bloody mess of it, I can’t do it by myself,” Colin told the middle of his three children.</p> <p>Glenn and his father exchanged "I love yous", and Glenn completed one last task for his father.</p> <p>“The psychological pressure on you must have been enormous,” Victorian Supreme Court Justice Elizabeth Hollingworth said in a renewed hearing on Wednesday.</p> <p>“You finally pulled the trigger spontaneously out of love and respect for his wishes,” she said.</p> <p>Glenn explained to the court that his father had always done everything he could for his family, and in return they would've done anything for him.</p> <p>His family are all supportive of his actions, as they saw the impact Colin's illness had on the last years of his life.</p> <p>“They also understand how important it was for him to be able to end his life on his own terms when the pain and burden of illness became too great for him,” Justice Hollingworth said.</p> <p>“They describe your actions in helping your father achieve his wish as loving, courageous and selfless.”</p> <p>Glenn Stratton was initially charged with murder after confessing his actions to police, and he spent 46 days behind bars, causing him to miss his father's funeral.</p> <p>Glenn pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting his father's suicide, and Justice Hollingworth declared there would be no benefit to keeping him in jail.</p> <p>He was instead ordered to undergo mandatory counselling.</p> <p>Mr Stratton's family have said they hope voluntary euthanasia will become more widely available so other families don't have to go through the same thing.</p> <p><strong><em>If you or a member of your family need help in a crisis, please call Lifeline on 13 11 14.</em></strong></p> <p><em>Image credit: 7News</em></p>

During her studies, McKay was inspired by her travels through former Yugoslavia to pen her debut novel, </span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Telling Time</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;">. After winning the 2020 First Pages Prize, McKay’s novel is now available.</span></p> <p><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">OverSixty</span> </em><span style="font-weight: 400;">sat down with McKay to chat about representing New Zealand’s Croatian community, her current reads, and the role cooking played in her novel.</span></p> <p><strong>O60: What book(s) are you reading right now?</strong></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">My current book on the go is <em>Betty</em> by Tiffany McDaniel — insights into the Cherokee Indian culture are an added bonus and despite the tough themes I’m enjoying cheering this resilient young woman on.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">And I have just finished two novels:</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><em>Crazy Love</em> by Rosetta Allan — A love story with a twist. A triumph of love conquering adversity. A no-holes barred insight in the realities of supporting our mentally unwell. This is Rosetta’s third novel. She manages to inject humour into what’s a tough subject to tackle and never allows the story to wallow.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">And for something much lighter, </span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">Take me Home</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;"> by Karly Lane — transports the reader from Australia to Scotland. A feel-good story with a dash of romance. </span></p> <p><strong>O60: Does your training in food science influence your writing in any way?</strong></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Great question! There are a few food descriptions peppered through <em>The Telling Time</em>. My love of cooking (and consuming food!) has most definitely influenced this. Some reviewers have noted it as a bonus to be transported by these descriptions. Any reference to food is of course relevant to the era and/or the setting but given the aroma, taste or even just the sight of food transports us to different settings it can be a useful and fun tool to employ: think Greece and Mediterranean dishes, or traditional Australasian sweet treats — lamingtons for example — or food which is typical in Croatia, such as <em>črostule</em>, <em>njoki</em>, <em>špek</em> or the local wine on Korčula, <em>Pošip</em>. As an author I invite the reader to use all their senses when imagining my characters in scene. If I get their taste buds watering then that’s a bonus.   </span></p> <p><strong>O60: How did you start writing historical fiction?</strong></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It’s the genre which I enjoy most as a reader and my background roles in research were also very helpful. The nugget for this novel came from my own experience when backpacking in the late 1980s tied in with my interest in the immigrant experience and for <em>The Telling Time</em>, the Croatian diaspora. I also wanted the novel to encompass the mother/daughter relationship, hence the dual timeline that includes the late 1950s and 1989. It’s scary to think that these two eras now count as historical! When researching for a novel like this it means going back even further in time. <em>The Telling Time</em> references events from the early 20</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">th</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Century, WWIII, and the events that followed afterward, particularly in the former Yugoslavia. I love that historical fiction often gifts the reader information they didn’t previously know. This for me is the joy of historical fiction writing; finding those facts to thread through the fiction to ensure the ‘world of the novel’ is credible. </span></p> <p><strong>O60: <em>The Telling Time</em> was inspired by your travels and the connections you made with the local Croatian community. How did it feel to represent this community with your novel? </strong></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I feel privileged to have been privy to stories from the Croatian community and delighted to shine some light on what makes this group unique, but also what unites their stories with other immigrant groups. It is always tricky finding the balance when representing a community that is not your own lived experience. For me, it was important to observe and listen at the local Dalmatian club when attending club nights and events. There were excellent resources to draw on at the club — their cultural museum and language tutor who checked my use of Croatian words/phrases in the novel — and having the novel reviewed by Dr Nina Nola from the University of Auckland’s English department was another essential step. Nina’s mother immigrated to New Zealand from Hvar in the 1950s. This is a novel, and therefore a work of fiction, but staying true to the culture and customs is an essential component and the feedback from readers of Croatian heritage suggests I have succeeded in getting the balance and details right. Of course, when Croatian publishers Znanje d.o. bought the translation rights for the novel earlier this year (to be published there in June 2022) this was a further seal of approval. I felt both proud and delighted that I would soon be able to gift copies of the translated novel to the club.  </span></p> <p><strong>O60: What book or books do you think are  underrated?</strong></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">That’s a curly question! <em>The Lost Lights of St Kilda</em> by Elisabeth Gifford is a gentle historic novel, published last year which I thoroughly enjoyed but don’t hear a lot about now. And I’ll put in a plug for fellow New Zealand author, Rosetta Allan, mentioned above. Along with <em>Crazy Love</em>, her two other novels, <em>Purgatory</em> and <em>The Unreliable People</em>, are both fabulous reads that deserve more air-time!!</span></p> <p><strong>O60: How do you deal with writer’s block?</strong></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I found the best solution was to chat more. By this I mean nutting out a problem with trusted friends or asking a question which then often provided a lead, or new tangent to explore. There was one dire moment of writer’s block when I was desperate to get my character, Gabrijela, out of the house. I asked Mum for ideas about social events in the 1950s and she told me how popular a day at the races was along with a personal story about backing an outside runner called Red Glare. Bingo! Guess where Gabrijela was now off to! Critique was also a valuable tool, especially during my Masters in Creative Writing year at Auckland University. It challenges you to think harder and strive to improve, to iron out the creases waiting to trip the reader out of their suspended disbelief.</span></p> <p><strong>O60: Which author, dead or alive, would you most like to have dinner with?</strong></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Has to be Janine Cummins, who wrote </span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">American Dirt</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;">. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;"></span></p> <p><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">Images: Supplied</span></em></p>

Grant Denyer shares touching post after wrongful rumours

<p>On the 18th of October, celebrity magazine New Idea published a story implying Denyer was having an affair with his<span> </span><em>Dancing With The Stars</em><span> </span>partner. Your dances are SENSATIONAL and nothing short of miraculous.</p> <p>“No offence Gidlet, you gave it your heart and soul and I love you to pieces but Lilz is a master choreographer and to watch her at work was mind blowing!!!! Bring on DWTS next year. I am SOOOO excited for this.”</p> <p>The cheating allegations published by New Idea infuriated the Denyer household last month, with Mrs Denyer even saying the photographer who took the photos apologised, as they had been taken out of context.</p> <p>“Right before this little ‘she’ll be right’ leg pat … I was on the phone with them also consoling Lilz,” Chezzi wrote, explaining that Cornish is a close friend of the family.</p> <p>“Lilz is like our adopted daughter. We grew extremely close during her month long stay with us here in Bathurst. We absolutely adore her!”</p> <p>She went on to describe the photo as “gross and really mean”.</p> <p>Denyer is appearing in the upcoming season of Dancing with The Stars: All Stars alongside sunrise weather man Sam Mac, McLeod’s daughters star Bridie Carter, Ricki-Lee Coulter and Angie Kent.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In </span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">5 minutes with author</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;">, </span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">Over60</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;"> asks book writers about their literary habits and preferences. Next in the series is Christine Sykes, a novelist and memoir writer based on Sydney’s south coast. After working as a Public Servant for 30 years and volunteering at Dress for Success Sydney for four, Sykes is now enjoying life’s simple pleasures and is regularly involved in tap dancing, acting, painting, and playing the flute. Her debut novel, </span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Changing Room</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;"> was inspired by the experiences of the women behind the charity Dress for Success. Her latest title, </span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">Gough and Me</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;">, is out now.</span></p> <p> </p> <p><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">Over60</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;"> talked with Sykes about writing routines, Jenny Hocking, and tough reads.</span></p> <p><strong>Over60:What book do you think more people should read?</strong></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Aside from my two books! There are so many wonderful Australian writers to choose from.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The book I think people should read to get an understanding of the way history can be manipulated is </span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Palace Letters</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;"> by Jenny Hocking. It is a gripping account of the ground-breaking work undertaken to reveal the truth behind the sacking of the Whitlam government and the extraordinary steps to hide that truth.</span></p> <p><strong>How did you make the transition from the Public Service to writing?</strong></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While I was in the public service in Canberra, I undertook short creative writing courses at ANU. This resulted in me writing many short stories and rediscovering my love of children’s stories.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When I retired, I decided to treat it as a writing sabbatical and try writing longer works. The Year of Novel Writing course at Writing NSW, gave me a structure to my time and a great foundation for writing my first published book, </span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Changing Room</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;">. I continued to explore writing through other courses and writing groups which led to the publication of my memoir, </span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">Gough and Me</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p> <p><strong> What was the last book that made you laugh?</strong></p> <p><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Single Ladies of Jacaranda Retirement Village</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;"> by Joanna Nell was hilarious, and a book I wish I’d written.</span> </p> <p><strong>What does your writing routine look like?</strong></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Most of my writing is done in the morning, which is my most creative time. I usually begin writing in longhand in exercise books, and move to typing on the computer when the story has taken shape. The afternoons are good for walking and letting the story settle in the back of my brain where new connections are made. Some people call this composting and it’s an important part of my creative process.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When I edit, I tend to work into the afternoon and often find different places to read the manuscript, which gives me an alternative perspective.</span></p> <p><strong>What is your best writing tip?</strong></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Invest in your writing, through whatever means are available to you, such as doing a course, having a professional mentor or editor, being part of a writing group or having a writing friend. This really helped me when I didn’t feel like writing or was questioning my ability to write. I also give myself permission to write badly – it’s better to have something on the page which I can then edit and mould, than swirling thoughts in my head.</span> </p> <p><strong>Which author, deceased or living, would you most like to have dinner with?</strong></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">My first choice would be Anais Nin – a prolific writer of journals, novels and essays. I adored her descriptions of the soirees she held in Paris with interesting people from the arts, politics and life. I hope she’d bring some with her and would love for her to include Gough and Margaret Whitlam.</span></p> <p>What do you do when you can’t seem to finish reading a book?</p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Usually I push through, hoping the author will grip me again, and sometimes I skip sections which are less interesting. There have only been a few books which I have abandoned.</span></p>
