Heart-breaking image captures reality of rental crisis

A heart-breaking photo has highlighted the reality of Australia's rental crisis, with a six-year-old boy and his mother forced to live in their ute for four long months.

Mackay, a 38-year-old mum from Perth, and her son Charlie spent two years couch-surfing with friends and family after Mackay escaped an abusive relationship.

After continuously getting knocked back from rental properties due to Mackay's lack of credit and tenant history, the family had no choice but to sleep in their car during the freezing winter months.

Their situation got so desperate that Mackay put out a plea for help on their local community Facebook page.

Claire Orange, a therapist and co-founder of cyber safety program Digii Social, spotted the post and opened up her home to the pair.

"I instantly recognised Charlie's school uniform in a picture Mackay posted and contacted the school to understand their situation," Ms Orange said.

"I found out a rental would become available for them within a month and offered they stay with me while they waited."

Ms Orange, herself a mother of four, described Mackay as a "remarkable" mum who consistently put her boy first.

"I admire her terrifically for her fortitude and resilience," Ms Orange said.

"I cannot give this woman any more credit. She looked after her son exceptionally and made sure she did everything to keep him stable, healthy and clean."

"Taking him to school every day, cooking for him, putting up her small summer tent when the weather allowed so that they were able to sleep lying stretched out instead of bundled up."

"She's a remarkable, ferocious mumma who's put her child's needs first consistently."

Claire has since started a GoFundMe for Mackay and Charlie to get back on their feet, as they are "on the cusp" of moving into social housing.

The funds will be used to help Mackay and Charlie buy furniture and whitegoods for their home.

"Mackay and Charlie have been part of our family for the last month - and what a delightful gift they've been," Ms Orange wrote on the GoFundMe page.

"And now that a home is available - I'd love to give Mackay and Charlie enough money to start their new life together."

Australia is facing a major housing crisis with rental prices skyrocketing to keep up with soaring mortgage costs, with vacancy rates plummeting.

Meet the ute-driving pup bringing joy to the world

The owners of a now-viral pup who was filmed behind the wheel of a work ute have been blown away by the fact that their innocent video has brought so much joy to people around the world.

Lexi the Jack Russell was recorded steering the Zschech family ute around a paddock on their farm in south-western Victoria – and the global responses they have received have been overwhelming.

"I've had messages from Finland, Canada, America, Great Britain," Cam Zschech, Lexi's owner, told A Current Affair.

"It took off a bit more than I thought. I had all these people messaging me. I can't believe it. I still can't believe it really."

Ian and Cam have a 1500-acre farm just outside Hamilton, Victoria, and they run grain crops and have about 2000 ewes.

"I've been here (for) the long 21 years of my life. It's a place that I'll probably be forever," Cam said.

"We got Lexi about 14 months ago. She was really quiet when we got her. We thought we had a good one, but she's turned out to be so much more than that."

As it turned out, Lexi has become an internet sensation after her efforts behind the wheel.

"I learned to drive with Dad in the passenger seat. We'd put it in low gear and we'd idle along and I would steer. I thought I'd try and teach Lexi," Cam said.

The attention that their pooch has received has brought the father and son even closer together.

"It's great," Ian said. "And here we are, near Hamilton. It's a beautiful part of the world."

For those wondering just how accomplished Lexi is behind the wheel, don't overthink it. To efficiently feed all the sheep, Cam often leaves the ute in low gear and Lexi jumps on the back to distribute hay around the paddock.

However, Lexi's latest role, where she sits up in the driver seat, is only to make people smile. She’s only ever left in the ute on their property, in a controlled environment, along a flat paddock.

Cam and Ian said they are just out to give everyone a laugh.

Image: A Current Affair

Heartbroken tradie's ute stolen with mother's ashes in glovebox

A man from Queensland has been left heartbroken after his ute, with his mother’s ashes in the glove box was stolen.

Carpenter Kayden Holmes had left his key in the ignition of his white Holden Colorado as he loaded tools into the boot when a thief jumped in and sped off on Sunday.

The incident was captured on a neighbour’s security camera and the footage was shared on social media. The clip shows Mr Holmes’ attempt to stop the grab and dash before he was dragged along the road in Holmview, a residential suburb of Logan.

The tradie was left with an ankle injury after his foot was run over during the scuffle. He is now desperate for the return of his mother’s ashes, which had been placed inside a piece of jewellery following her death from cancer in 2015.

It’s unlikely the alleged thief knew the precious item was inside the glove box of the ute when it was taken.

“The car is replaceable, everything in that car is replaceable, but the ashes aren’t,” he told 7NEWS on Tuesday.

“I need them back, I don’t want them, I need them.”

Mr Holmes told Sunrise that he was now offering “a reward to anyone that comes forward with information leading to the name or the arrest, even just the ashes”.

“That’s just the last thing I have of mum and it takes a lot to make me upset, and we’ve gone through a lot of humps in this road, but this one has knocked me about a bit.”

Mr Holmes said he kept the ashes in his car as he liked to have his mother near him at all times.

“I just thought that having her in the car with me, she can come everywhere I go kind of thing, just to have that kind of reassurance.”

Queensland Police are investigating the incident and urge anyone with information to contact them.

Image: 7 News

Has this happened to you? Mazda recalls 30,000 cars over brake issues

Mazda Australia has issued a product recall after two separate brake issues were found in one of their popular vehicles.

The car manufacturer company was forced to recall 30,505 cars on Sunday after product safety regulators found issues in the Mazda BT-50.

The mid-sized ute carries serious fears over the vehicle’s front break hose and front brake caliper.

The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) issued a statement on their website advising people of the recall.

“A front break hose could rupture if mileage is greater than 45,000km and the vehicle is used under conditions that require the front suspension to operate through its full range of movement, e.g. off-road driving on tracks,” the ACCC said.

The front brake caliper material does not meet specific qualifications in over 30,000 vehicles which causes the front brake caliper to crack.

“If the front brake hose fails or the front brake caliper cracks, the brake system warning lamp of the instrument cluster will illuminate,” the ACCC explained.

Accidents can be caused from these issues the ACCC warned, as failure of either the front break hose or the front break caliper could mean loss of brake fluid – meaning the brake pedal travel could increase as well as the stopping distances.

Owners of the BT-50 series will be contacted by Mazda as soon as parts become available for fixes.

The product was sold between June 17, 2016 and September 24, 2018.

The BT-50 is a compact, mid-sized ute that has been produced by the popular car brand since 2006.

For more information, visit the ACCC website.

A full VIN list is available here.

Red-bellied black snake surprises driver as it hitches a ride on ute

A NSW South Coast driver has received an unpleasant surprise, after spotting a red-bellied black snake on his car window while driving.

Ted Ogier was in the middle of completing a delivery for his employer when the snake slithered out from the bonnet.

As Ted continued driving, the snake then wrapped itself around the driver’s side mirror.

"It'd come out from under the engine bay under the bonnet, it was probably a bit warm there," Ted told the ABC.

Ted then called his co-worker Kai Pearse, who got a broom to remove the snake.

"I just had a broom in the back of the ute and … basically just got him off the car nice and safely, and just ushered him into the bushland off on the side of the road," Kai said.

The pair believe the snake was around 2.5 metres long and Kai thought it entered the engine bay to keep warm.

"Last night it got a bit cold down here on the South Coast, so I think he's got up into the engine bay of the vehicle, and he sat up on the engine to keep himself warm," he said.

"Then this morning Ted's taken that vehicle down to Eden and it might've got a bit too hot in there, so he wanted out."

Despite the scare, Ted said there were worse things that could show up in his car on the road.

"Not as frightening as getting a spider on the inside — spiders are one thing I don't like, but I don't like snakes either," he said.

What is the worst critter you have encountered while driving? Celebrating our national vehicle at the Deni Ute Muster

You can’t get much more Aussie than a ute. Celebrate our national vehicle (and a lot more) at this unique festival.

What is it?

Held in the NSW country town of Deniliquen, the Deni Ute Muster began as a standalone event in 1999. The town was suffering from a crippling drought and much of its traditional agricultural income was drying up. Members of the community wanted to plan something special to draw tourists to the town. The festival was designed to celebrate all things Australian, including the iconic ute that is an integral part of regional culture. In the first year, around 2,800 drivers took part. Now, there are almost 10,000 utes on show and 20,000 people come to see them.

What events are there?

There’s a lot more than utes at this two-day festival. A huge line up of Australian artists will be playing on the main stage, including Lee Kernaghan, The McClymonts, Shannon Noll, Sunny Cowgirls, Beccy Cole, James Blundell, and Brewn and The Wolfe Brothers. Be entertained by whipcracking, bull riding and wood chopping competitions; off road driving demonstrations and driving competitions; reptile displays; the Brophy Brothers Circus; and miniature pig racing. Try your hand at bubble soccer (where you play with your body inside a big inflatable balloon), play classic games at the carnival, ride a camel and see the country’s most tricked out utes compete for the title of Ute of the Year. Each year there’s an attempt at the Guinness World Record for the most blue singlets in one place – the festival set the record in 2015 with 3,959.

How can I attend?

Tickets for the Deni Ute Muster are $249 per person. Kids under 13 are free with a paying adult. Most people camp on the site – it’s free and there’s a great atmosphere. You can bring a tent, caravan or camper, or just set up your swag in the back of your ute. The campgrounds can get a bit wild, but there is a separate family camping area where things will be quieter. If you’re staying in town there are regular buses to the site. Remember that Deniliquin is a very small town so accommodation options are limited – you’ll need to book well in advance. There’s a good chance it will be wet and the grounds can get very muddy. Gumboots are a good idea.
